Jake, I use Purina Gamebird Startena, 30% protein, for my chicks. I feel they are more like gamebirds than domesticated chickens in many aspects. Most commerical chicken starters were formulated using broiler or layer industry models......not what we got going on!
Michelle, My two girls started laying at 6 months (hatched first week of May '10, first eggs Nov 11-14). I didn't keep a count of how many but they layed regularly throughout the winter and spring until each went broody. Perhaps the broodiness would put them into a "not a layer" catagory according to some because total egg count would go down, but it's a trait many of us want.
Mary,
for all (even though that would mean I wouldn't be able to win the cool sign
) of Shawn's eggs to hatch!!
The emus are very cute but no temptation for me.........now Diana...... maybe!!
Cute chicks everyone!!
Anna was hanging around Audun and the hens yesterday and spending less time with her chicks (now five weeks old)....she didn't go into the Ice House to sleep with them though. She was with her five in their little coop at sundown........but, I don't think it will be long before she's back with the main flock.........she was squatting for Audun instead of puffing out and pecking at him. Maybe another hatch for her this summer!!
Asta's single chick is doing great. If the weather cooperates, I'll let them outside today.
One of the three chicks at my friend's house was limping yesterday. I went over and helped her move the hen and chicks out of the main coop into a separate one. She thinks it may have gotten stepped on by mom when defending them from the rest of the flock. They now have their own private place!
The teens, week befores and Easter Hatchalongs are all growing and getting big. I'll try and get some pics this week.
Off to get chores done.....then off to church...didn't realize how late it getting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
