I stupidly put a lot of hay in the Icelandic coop a few weeks ago and they built nests in three corners and would only lay eggs in those. The eggs were nasty and discolored yellow from laying in the hay. So, I cooked up a devilish plot today to get them laying in the nest boxes again. I cleaned the coop of all the hay and only put down a thin layer of shavings over the cement floor. They are going to really have to work to pile up enough for a nest. They went nuts! They were wailing like women at one of those funerals where people throw themselves in the coffin. It was ridiculous. Isi was hoping from one nest box to another clucking as if he found food in there to get them interested and over their grief at the loss of the nasty nests in the floor. I came back to the house and let them work it out. I just went back down to check on them and........drumroll please, there were 14 eggs in the nest boxes! I am feeling right now like it is possible I am smarter than a chicken!
p.s. Sorry Kelly that you had to hear this story twice!
