Icelandic Chickens

Dar--Here is a pic of some of the chicks Rachel hatched from the eggs I sent her. Some were your eggs, some were mine. If you recall, we were getting her the "ingredients" for Olive Eggers.

Check out the crested one in the middle. Do you think Vindur was spreading his love around before he stopped doing his job?

I just became interested in Icelandic Chickens, when Hillbilly Hen offered me some eggs after she heard that my flock has gotten Coryza, and I will have to cull every single bird.

So, I would like to know more about this interesting breed. I plan to start finding hatching eggs in the fall to replace some what I had lost to start over again.

I was considering the name Skinka for this little brat.

But, she is white, and certainly not "tanned."

Skinka is an Icelandic term describing a certain group of girls. It is a negative word, and one should not be proud to be called a "skinka." Skinka actually means ham in Icelandic! Interesting blog about this....

Brittney wants to name her, "Gypsy."

Hooray on finding another preservation minded neighbor there!

Raccon # 17 trapped last night. I think this is the smallest one we have trapped. OMG, does that mean it has brothers and sisters out there? GEEEEEEESH!

Where in MI are you located? Seems like I remember your "name". Did you perhaps go to the Michigan chickenstock?

Well I finally got one of the fray feathered babies. It was the second late one to hatch out of the chicks I shipped to Jake. It hatched on June 1st, going on 11 weeks old now. It is barely bigger than Lukka's two week old babies. It is a tiny body on tall legs. It was slated to be re-homed to Farmer Fred but, in the cage the night before it was horrible pecked by mean Ginger the Welsummer. In trying to get away, it got itself stuck through the wire and was literally a sitting duck for her to nearly scalp him. That was over three weeks ago and he loked like this.

Today he looks like this. I didn't even realize his feathers were frayed until they started growing back in. He/She is a sweet baby but I am sure not destined for a long life. For now he runs and eats and drinks and that's all I ask of him. He was breathing heavy in the heat yesterday but is much better today. They can't all be pretty.
