Icelandic Chickens

Jake, you're making me cold just thinking about those temps! Make sure you secure some warmth for yourself first! Man I hate to be cold.

The big shuffle has commenced. All the Icelandics except the Mama and the little babies were moved under cover of darkness down to the Icelandic coop. I hope they survive the emus. I am worried sick about that but they need to get moved. The new coop which will be called The Jail (because that is what it looks like!) now houses two Ameraucanas and the three Isbars. The nine juvenile Isbars will be kicked out of the grow out coop tomorrow and will join the others on that side of the yard. The other side of the yard houses my nine layers, six of which aren't laying yet!

Here's a pic of the new jail coop. I am going to make the windows look like bars and paint a "jail" sign. The roof will be finished when the green netting comes down and before the new black netting goes up. The pop door will be where that little ladder is resting. It is very basic but should meet all their needs. I will probably insulate it and cover the studs with OSB when DH leaves town for a boating trip. He would fresk if I mentioned it now.

Looks great

I keep thinking raising chickens is easy, it's just the work with the coops that is hard

I have been working a bit here and there on an old truck camper DH gave me to use as a coop.

It looks GREAT, Mary! I LOVE the new jail coop! You and Michael are becoming quite the builders. You could probable become profession construction workers.

Funny you said that, about covering the studs when Michael leaves town. When we built our very first coop, the big layers coop, that is exactly what I did! hahaha I knew Mike would have a cow if I mentioned it at the time, so I did it myself. I used hardboard, and that was rather easy to work with and I like it.

Yep, I put insulation in the layer coop and covered with OSB and it makes it much nicer, cooler in summer, warmer in winter. I didn't have to cut the height on the boards in the layer coop but this one is not as tall. I have a table saw in the barn so that should be pretty easy to do. I'll just drive the wood down to the barn on the back of the Polaris, cut it and drive it back up. It will be done before he gets back and he'll never even notice the difference! Men! I just think it makes sense to do it right the first time.

I envy you folks that will actually use power tools yourselves. I am terribly afraid of them. With all the lumber piles we have here I can only imagine all the things I could do if I weren't such a fraidy cat.

I couldn't live without my power tools! I love the chop saw the most. It rocks!
