This is the hen to match that earlier t
Roo. She is a wanderer. She is always flying over the fence but always comes back when I call for her.

Sorry to post so often but today I had to chase this hen... Has anyone had your chickens fly on the roof of your house? This girl flies just as good as a pheasant.

Sporteltx - beautiful birds! Icelandics fly very well and can be very tough to catch unless they are roosting. That is if they don't decide to roost in the trees or on your roof. "Land"race doesn't always fit their personalities

Thanks for the welcome. I live in a town called west Texas but I grew up in your neck of the woods in Grand Rapids Michigan. Its pretty cold here right now too. 25 degrees and tonight it will be in the teens. The grass is still green so they are out doing what they love. Foraging. I am having issues with posting more pictures but I will keep trying. I have a pair from 2 different lines so I have good diversity.
Welcome Sporteltx!

West, Texas......home of the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox outfielder Scott(y) Podsednik. I pass by on I-35 when heading to Llano county to visit my parents, brother and sister-in-law. Did you get your flock from Daria and/or Andy?

.........on the "Land" race.........more like extraterrestrial race!

Haha yeah, I'm a twins fan because my dad grew up in Minnesota. I got some birds that were decendants of Andy's birds and I also ordered a pair from someone in Washington...the name escapes me at the moment. Berrytangle farms maybe? The eggs I got from Andy. I'm hoping I can get a few to hatch.

I'm glad to hear Andy is still passing on the Icelandic love! Tell him we miss him here and not to be a stranger, if you talk to him.

Tangle Berry Farms has BYCer Icelander's stock so having the two lines should be a great start for you.

Your hen reminds me of my pullet, Glora...

I will pass on that message to Andy. He has been very helpful getting me started. Glora looks just like my hen....I haven't named mine yet. I'm thinking an Icelandic name meaning flight or something similar. How many icelandics do you all keep? I'm hoping for maybe eight hens and 2 roos until I move out of town.

I just happen to have an English to Icelandic dictionary handy..... (Thanks Laurie!

)... and the Icelandic word for flight is flotti and the word for fly is fluga. Glora means faint light or glimmer.

At present, I have 20 Icelandics: 2 cocks, 5 hens, 6 cockerels and 7 pullets.....at least 4 of the cockerels will be leaving before spring. I also have 9 other non-white egg layer hens that help keep the female/male ratio up.
