Michelle in Alaska as well.Aww, poor Phoenix's. They do look very lovely, though. I love that the one let you take a picture with the Santa hat on him![]()
The SFH's are also larger than the Icelandics, from what I understood. Icelandics tend to be smaller for LF, kind of like Polish. All three of my girls are dainty little things, and my one, Flekka, is just tiny. She's the smallest hen I have out there.
Ace, from what I've read and all, there are now more people on the East coast that have Icelandics, mostly from Behl's line. It sounds like there are at least several flocks that we know about in the Midwest, as well, and a few in Texas. I don't know how many have them on the West coast - I can't remember. There's a flock that used to belong to Mahonri down in Arizona. Shawn has his flock/two flocks up in Idaho, and I have mine here. There are at least one or two other people in Utah who now have them that I don't actually know. And now you, yay!
Also, the other egg that developed under my broody is hatching. So two babies for meeeeee.
So sorry to hear about Heidi. I have 3 5-year old hens left from my original 7 I started with.Hi Everyone!![]()
acemario, that you have a great hatch!![]()
I lost my last SLW hen, 4 year old Heidi, in our last sub-zero cold snap. In October, she hatched and raised half of my Falki x Fjola youngsters and was still "raising" them. She will be missed.
On a happier note, our 10 day forecast has 4 days above 20 F and two at 33 F in it!For some of you that may not sound like a warm-up but our average high temp for January was 15.5 F! Despite the frigid cold, the hens and pullets have provided eggs enough for our family, a co-worker....and themselves. All frozen cracked eggs get scrambled and fed back to the flock and there were quite a few of those! I saw Gaela puff up as one of the cockerels approached her and she talked like a broody at him.......she'd better not even give that idea a second thought for another six weeks! I haven't taken any pics for awhile since they aren't out much and the coop isn't very photogenic
but will try to get some later in the week when the temps warm.![]()
Stay safe everyone!

I've been checking out some Icelandic hatching eggs from a flock in Wisconsin on Ebay- has anyone here gotten icelandics from there?
I think both karimw and coldupnorth got their original Icelandics from people in WI that got their flocks from Lyle Behl. ....two different people, both in WI but I don't think either sells on EBay. What is the seller name? Maybe one or both of them will chime in.I've been checking out some Icelandic hatching eggs from a flock in Wisconsin on Ebay- has anyone here gotten icelandics from there?
