Icelandic Chickens

Every time I have to let cockerels go, I wonder if I'm making the right choices. It is impossible to keep them all, and most times, the decision has to be made before they are even 6 months old. I know I've let some gems pass through my hands but what's a small flock owner to do?

Speaking of cockerels.....here are some from the Easter Hatchalong group....

Other Mary, what a shame - they sure are beauties. To bad roosters can't have sexual reassignment procedures so they could stay in their homes.

Okay, it's time to play "Which ones are the boys?"

I have my suspicions, but I'd like to see what the general consensus is. Four chicks, one black crested, one redhead, one blonde, and the black with the white belly.

Here are some of my young Icelandics. It really surprises me how big some of the combs and wattles are on some of the pullets.

Those are some mighty colorful "pullets".

Hey, Kelly, my two Barnevelder chicks that hatched from the eggs I won in the Easter Hatchalong Fun Night contest just happened to get photographed with Gaela

Would you like to tell me if they are pullets

If you need a better look, I might have taken other pictures....
Sorry, I was gone camping for a week. Better pictures would help, it's harder with the blues. The one in front looks like a cockerel and I can't see the back one well enough. Let me see if I can find a picture of one of my blue pullets about the same age.

I love reading the thread, just wish I could have chickens.
Hiya Dar!

Tough call between the blue and the mottled in the front.

I'd say pictures 2,3 & 5 are boys, the others were too far away to tell.
I'd agree.

Red, I think the black crested looks like a pullet and the others are cockerels

. Watch the wattles to see if they get larger and redder quickly. I have been fooled by a pullet or two that gets wattles early, but usually the cockerels have them quite young. The other thing is color pattern. In my flock I can see similarities in patterns from year to year and that helps me with my own but my not be accurate for others.
I see that Sven has a bi-color sickle feather like Eldur has. Love those!!
