Icelandic Chickens

DW and I visited kathyinmo today to pick up a few JG's. I saw the Icelandics she has and decided (to myself of course since DW mistakenly thinks we have enough chickens) that I should maybe look into this one next. Love the look of the breed.

And now that other folks in warm regions are saying they are doing just fine in the heat, I'm so tempted.... I could only have one pullet, though, so I wouldn't be much help to the re-population project. Maybe I'll hatch some eggs someday and keep one for myself and give others to people I know that are allowed to have roosters and can be trusted to keep working on the breed. They are just so neat!

I was really tempted to take one, just for the barring alone. Man they were nice.

But I do enjoy being married, and it is a long walk from Nevada to West Plains. if something happens to my roo before Kathy gets rid of them you can bet I'll be giving her a call.

Tonight Lukka and her babies moved from the coop floor to the top roost with Isi, the baby-daddy. BTW, it looks like Lukka's babies are one girl, one boy. I have temporarily named them "Spot" and "Not" because one has spots and the other does not.

They looked so cute and he was so proud.

My oldest pullets are sleeping on the nest boxes, but not for long!

The juveniles have selected a spot in the corner. One little roo and his girls.

This little guy sleeps alone in the opposite corner, although it looks like tonight he has a little pullet snuggled up next to the wall.

I still love the Icelandics and can watch them for hours. The little black roo with the white hackles started crowing yesterday, if you could call it that! He is my only roo to get all the sylables in the "cock-a-doo-dle-doo." We're so proud and I'll bet the neighbors are too.

Like I care! I close escrow tomorrow on my five acres and we will be out of here soon! Bugsy was re-homed for his own safety. DH was about to kill him! I have 11 viable eggs in the incubator that I will put under my broodies after we move. Anyway, just wanted to touch base and share pictures from tonight's segment of musical roosts.

If you got eggs or birds from me please post an update. I love seeing and hearing how they are doing.

The Nevada Tomhusker is talking about is the town kathyinmo lives in, Nevada, Missouri.

My two boys and two girls are doing fine. The boys spend part of their time in solitary confinement (a separate pen within the yard the others free range in) since when they are both out they stalk and spar with each other and harress the ducks and hens. The girls are just as friendly as ever and still sleep separately from the other hens in their crate. I haven't taken any new pics but will try to get some this weekend.

They chest bump and run at each other with their hackles flared. After a few minutes of that they settle into a stare-down before heading off to take a nap together.
