Icelandic Chickens

Excellent research and thanks for the info. I have noticed the same in some of my flock. I have an EE hen that lays a lovely blue egg but she is a cross bred by a friend who is a vet. Susan is creating what she calls "Alaska Eggers" they lay the beautiful blue eggs but they are much more hardy than a typical hen and have a very compact rose comb plus they seem fluffy underneath, like there is more down to their downy layer.

I usually have the luxury of our temps dropping pretty evenly through late September and early October so that there is no real "snap" but a steady decline into cold. I think that helps the birds acclimate. Because of predators, all mine are locked in at night, but they do get the option of going out all year round, it's their choice.

Interestingly, I have 4 silkies, 3 years old, one roo has a pretty big comb, never a bit of frostbite on him AND they all still have all their toes. Could it be that evilness eliminates any temperature sensitivities? Hmmm.

thanks again for the great info.

Here is our 1st Icelandic Hatchling of 2011.

They are about the size of a buttercup. Large fowl, but on the smaller size.

Thanks Happy Chooks! I took them out to be with the Americauna mixes I hatched from you (olive eggers). I thinned out 3 roos and now have 3 (2 gals and a boy) of yours with the two little icelandics and my bantams. I figure I'll let them grow out with the others (for warmth and companionship) then when they mature ~and I figure out if they are a boy and a girl or two boys~ I'll give them their own space.

I love the color of the one that I am hoping is a girl, its white but almost has a blue hue to it with a tiny rose comb. When they feather out some more (and the snow is gone) I'll put some pictures up of them free ranging with my flock.

How's the hatching going Cheryl & Mary? I have 4 of 7 out, 1 zipping and 2 doing nothing. 3 of the four are already in the brooder. I have 2 dark/white and 2 chipmunk so far. Here are the three that are dried off.
