Icelandic Chickens

you all have some adorable little chicks. I can't wait to get some more little ones. I still just have the six. 4 whitish ones, 1 brownish and 1 blackish. one of the whitish ones that I helped out of the shell at the very end is not thriving. 4 of the six have crests and it cracks me up how cute they are. My fav is the brownish one. I'm praying pullet, but it is the largest of the 6. One of the little whitish ones is for certain a roo.

Great looking chicks everyone!! Icelandics are like a box of chocolates..........!

Kathy, Neither of my girls have crests so I'm wondering if I'll get any with crests. Maybe it takes two copies of that gene?

Kathy........your new hatchlings are adorable. I love the 3rd one with the black dot on it's head, reminds me of my light brahma when she was a chick. Hope you didn't hatch any brahma's.

The older ones are neat too. I love the variety you have. I'm sure you knew this already, but in the last picture, the chipmunk one in the lower right corner is a roo. No pullet stands like that!

How have the Oreo's feathered in? Have they turned out mottled like I thought they would?

If the gene / allele coding for crest in Icelandics is the same coding for toppy in old English and American games, then I think it is incomplete dominant. Birds that are homozygous for crest gene would have a bigger crest than those that are heterozygous.

Even if same gene, the crest of Icelandics different from those of games so likely other genes influence appearance when crest is manifested.

Lack of crest in some flocks is already evidence for some flocks not having some genes because of birds exchanged not having all genes typical of Icelandic chickens as a whole. So yes, swap away! It is how nature preserves many genes.
