Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, you have rendered me speechless, no east feat. Remeber a couple of months when I reported to DH seeing a mouse darting back and forth in the garage but I couldn't get a good look at him? It turned out to be an Icelandic chick that had fallen out of the brooder and was living on spilt feed, water that leaked under the garage door, and keeping warm curled up under the freezer motor. Raising Icelandics is not for sissies!

Mary, I didn't do well with this hatch. Besides the eggs cracking when they rolled out of the carton, they must have hurt 3 others. I only had 4 hatch.

One of them had spradle legs again, but I caught it while it was still in the hatcher, so I put the bandaid strap on it right away. It looks better already, so I'm hopeful. Thank you again for the eggs!

On a side note, someone's dog was loose yesterday and came into my yard and killed one juvenile my patio, one adult in the back yard, and 3 in the coop. Lost my WCBP, Blue NN, and a couple of black ones I don't know the breeds of. I'm hoping it didn't eat any of the smaller juvies, because I wouldn't know it since I didn't count all the ones on the patio. Needless to say I was NOT a happy camper yesterday.

3/4 in this hatch.

During the night, the 3 pips and zips from yesterday popped out. The 4th was still hamering away inside the shell this morning but no pip. At 11:00 I checked again and it was quiet. Decided to intervene and at least get him some air in there through an outside pip. Too late. Poor little fella had used up all of his air in the sac and was gone.

He had grown so big inside the shell that he literally couldnt move enough to get a good position to pip. Sad. Sad. Sad.

The 3 little ones from this hatch of 4 are in the brooder fluffing. Pics to come.

I'm sorry for your losses but thanks for posting, it reminds us (me) to expect the unexpected...

Congrats on the new hatches, I'm still waiting for an update on my eggs, The only tracking info shows they went through Sacramento on Saturday. I hope they show up tomorrow.
