Icelandic Chickens

((((Kathy))))

They're here!! They're here!!

Looks like they are all safe and sound. Have them resting now for a trip to the bator in the morning.
Cant wait to see what we get.

I loved the surprises too!!

Thank you!

Today I dragged all of the chicks out of the brooder and did a quick gender check.
Chicks range in age from 2 weeks to 4 weeks. So some were easy to tell and some were a pretty good guess.

I definitely have 3 cockerels and 4 pullets.
From the other 6 I think I have 2 cockerels and 4 pullets.

So, if I'm right

I have 5 cockerels and 8 pullets!

Oh my gosh! How could I forget the best news of all. I HAVE AN EGGLESS BROODY

I have been yanking eggs away from my silkie mama for 2 day cause I dont need no more mixed silkies. Today she gave me the biggest, ugliest stink eye when I snatched the egg that she just laid.

Later, when I was sitting here in the kitchen ogling the eggs from Kathy, I about fell out of my chair when I remembered poor eggless Ozzie in the barn. Grabbed 5 eggs, put them down and I swear I could see little 'heart shaped thought bubbles'

just like these coming from her head when she saw them. She raced across the pen, settled onto them, her eyes went glassy, her head hung down and she was in full brood mode.

Gotta love them silkies!!

It took this long to get there????? If I were you I wouldn't wait until morning. Letting them sit for 6 hours or so is all I ever do. The longer they sit they older they get. I dunno, but it works for me.

On another note, same topic ..... Post Office ...
There is a thread in Random Ramblings entitled something like, "USPS Rant...."
A couple days ago I posted that I think they do a pretty good job, yadda, yadda, yadda....
WELL, wouldn't ya know it! As I am posting that very post, chicks were in the mail on their way from Florida to me (Missouri). Luanne and I traded some chicks. We both set our eggs at the same time, hatched together, etc. We both shipped out our chicks on Monday. Express Mail leaves here at 5 PM. Luanne received the chicks I got her in less than 24 hours. YAY ! ! ! I did not get the chicks from Florida until 630AM today. Hatched Sunday, shipped Monday, arrived Thursday AM. I did not want to open the box. I was preparing myself all day yesterday. By the way, Luanne did put "gro-gel" in the box. Well, every single chick is alive and full of vigor! Can you believe it???? I AM SO HAPPY TODAY! ! !

I forgot. What did I send? Olive Eggers? I shipped out so many packages Monday, I can't keep them all straight.

Yes Ma'am. 2 Olives and a BCM?

Mama broody has 5 of the Icelandics and I let sit about 5 hours and popped them in! Cant wait til candle day.'

Love my Icelandic loving friends!

WOOO HOOOO ! ! ! I hope you have a great hatch!

The surprise eggs are all from pen 3. That is a Lavender Ameraucana rooster over a bunch of different layers. Those 3 should all hatch into Olive Egger pullets (I ordered no roosters in that pen).

Can you believe how dark my Olive Egger lays? Isn't that the darkest egg you've ever seen? I love my girl. Everyone always wants her eggs (I'm talking about egg customers that actually eat the eggs!). Anyway, it is so dark I wanted to cross her back to a blue egg gene, or it would get to looking like a dark Marans egg I think.
