Icelandic Chickens

I think one new hot wire, placed about hip high, on the outside, ought to do it.

I'm glad I teach my kids to be respectful of service animals. When they are working you pet them with your eyes.

Hi Michelle

that would keep 'petters' back but the jack russells would run right under it not knowing that it was there. They need one about 4-5" off the ground, at full strength.

Let them go home glassy eyed .

Mary, I'm sorry you are having to deal with this butthead of a neighbor. I really don't understand people, thinking that they can pet other people's animals without asking. There is a guy in Auburn that lost his champion endurance horse because some jerk fed it oleander leaves over the fence. The leaves poisoned the horse and he ended up having to put it down. People just don't have any respect for other people's property anymore.

I hope the emu's grow up fast and teach those dogs a lesson. You are doing a wonderful job with your chickens.

Mary, I love reading your blog and this thread. You are very good to all of your animals. I sometimes think of how much spare time and less heartache I would have if I lived in the city and didn't have animals, but that only lasts about five seconds. I LOVE ANIMALS! I would be lost without them and I think you would be too. I can't imagine how boring or lonely it would be with out something to pet, feed, watch grow, play, yell at, laugh at, worry about etc. Animals bring me so much joy that it always seems to override the worry, heartache, and trouble that comes with keeping them. Go outside and sit and watch them for about 10 minutes and you will remember why you have them in the first place.

e.t.a Putting up with stupid neighbors and their dogs does make times tough, but I am sure there is a way to take care of the problem. Would a sign on the fence stating that the "donkeys are service animals please do not touch" help at all??? Probably not with the non-listening neighbor but it is just a thought.

Thanks everyone. I have been down at the Icelandic coop this morning tending to the little guy I injured last night. Unfortunately I think it is a tendon injury. He is up and walking around but sometimes it seems to give out. I am going to cage him and let it rest for a few days. I tried vet wrapping it but that just caused the leg to splay out to the side. I am so angry with myself.

Mary, I've been out of town for a few days, but this was the first post I read and I want to encourage you. First the SPCA will work with you in situations where a person is violating laws concerning animals. They have a whole different take on it too, for example they would say it is in the dogs best interest to be leashed while walking. If you have local Animal Control they will issue a citation, you theoretically don't have to be in the position of your neighbor knowing that you are the person reporting him. Yes he may guess that you are only because he is provoking you and expecting a response. I worked and volunteered with the SPCA for a few years. They can be useful.
Also your baby Icelandic can get better, I have seen a rooster carried off by a dog and chewed up come limping back home a few days latter. He was probably left for dead. These Icelandics are even more resilient that other chickens if thats possible.
I will be praying for you!
I just returned from a really fun trip to Louisiana, I have raised and hybridized Native Louisiana Irises since I was a child, the interest was passed down from my grandparents to me and I carry it on. All those warm hearted Cajun folks are so much fun, and then down to New Orleans my home of 41 years and having a blast with old friends..... ahhhhh life is rich and wonderful! Have a much better day today Mary!
