Icelandic Chickens

I have two broody Ameraucanas at present. I had no idea this breed would be SO VERY BROODY.

I'm selling some chickens tomorrow and then I'm taking the two broodies and putting them in the Icelandic pen, we'll let Vindur chase them around a little and perhaps break their broodiness.

Well, my project chicks should produce broody inclined Dels, eh? LOL I was hoping for that in them.

Cody is building a broody coop. It should be done tomorrow. He still has to paint it and put on the doors. It is 8x4 and will be divided in half. This is for broodies with their chicks. I am using my Nella brooders for hens setting..... that itself is 4. I am also using a dog house for the Orp. I may need to adopt Lisa's broody idea. Remember her picture of all the broodies?

I just went to put everyone to bed and found that the Icelandics have FINALLY figured out how to go up. Every night they have been nestled on the floor, like a big puddle of colors. This evening I hear all this flapping and squawking, when I look in I am greeted by one Icelandic resting peacefully on the cross-member of the roof truss, and about 8 others on the top rung of the nestbox rack. Oh, and the turkey that hatched with them is up there too (hence all the crazy flapping, she's not very coordinated yet

) My Millie, who usually resides on that top rung is rather miffed and cussing up a storm that those young whipper-snappers are in her spot! Tomorrow I'm taking the camera.

One exact line I would really like to have !

I thought I had 3 and 3, but, it may be 4 roos and 2 pullets, need another week or so on it, just a small 3 week old one today that could be a roo.

I will be anxiously waiting to hear about the pips and hatches today.

I will get pics of the chicken house with occupants. Wed I start on the outside run and hope by the weekend to get pics of them all .

Right now I have 3 nice cedar roost posts inside the house but will add a lower one this morn for the littlest guys.

Of the six I have one very gentle chipmunk pullet who comes over to the door to visit and get her beak and breast petted, thinking about a name for her, she is developing a beautiful cape, the little black roo comes over to peck at me, yesterday I picked him up and petted him which confused him, he now has a couple white primaries showing on each wing, over the weekend I didnt see the white. So far Skjonur is the only Crested one. So he is in the running for a keeper. The little white one is a roo, curious, doesnt peck but he follows the sweet pullet over to see what is going on. I am really curious about what he will develop into.

I envy you all your broodies but next year all who want to here can.

I have two 4H'rs hoping for a pair, or at least a roo. I am hoping to start them with pairs too.

Mottled black and white Icelandic & chipmunk roo Icelandic

Anyone else have a black & white like that?

Blue with a "do" hopefully a pullet and a different chipmunk roo.

That Isi gene is strong... I've got a goodly number like this and then whites with black spots. One started looking like this and then the feathers around her head started turning a red chocolate or dun color. (I didn't get a good pic of her, but she's a keeper)

Here's a white EE with my NH... is it a pullet Kathy?

Here is "Goliath" with 3 other Icelandics and the lone SLW... Is it a pullet or roo Kathy?

Look at the legs on Goliath... this came out of a LARGE Kathy egg, the last one to hatch that survived. I'd love it if it were really a pullet.. the comb is tiny...

I bought this one out of a Pet Depot pullet bin and put it under my Easter Hatch broody... any ideas on sex and breed? I'm guessing Welsummer? What do you all think?

Ok, so I go out early this morning before the Icelandic pop door opens. What do I see out out the corner of my eye? Why, it's Stella flying out of this barn on the neighbor's property. I went back inside for my camera.

By the time I returned, the Icelandics were out and Stella was heading home for breakfast. That is her across the road at the neighbor's house.

She hops up on the neighbor's fence.

And over.

Saunters across the road and hops the fence back into our yard. That little juvenile roo was beside himself worrying about her. He gave her a little roo discipline when she got back home.

What am I gonna do with her?????
