BOTH of my Icelandic pullets laid eggs today!

I rehomed 6 of the Icelandic roos. I still have a few more... I'm just waiting till they are bigger to see which one is the biggest and the prettiest. I have one I named Dexter that has light hackles... I think he's going to be a real looker... I also saved a black rosecomb... we'll see what he looks like in a few months. I have another 'wheaten' looking one and we'll just wait to see how looks as he matures.

Mahonri, sometimes it feels so good to thin the flock. I just did that, and order has been restored. It was amazing when they went to bed tonight. No scuffling and knocking others off. I was in my brooder room and it was just a peaceful roosting. The girls can relax again too. Looking forward to seeing pics of the roos you keep. It is always a difficult decision and I have started choosing more for behavior than looks. Of course all mine are gorgeous so that isn't much of a problem.

I did a potentially stupid thing tonight. I had 52 extra Icelandic eggs after allowing for orders so I set them! I can't even believe I did it! Here's why I did. Next Saturday our local feed store is having what they call a HUGE poultry sale for local breeders and backyard chicken enthusiasts. So I thought, why not put together a flyer about the Icelandic chickens and take orders for chicks that will hatch two weeks after the sale. With my most recent hatch rates I should get at least three dozen. It seemed like a good idea to me at the time. Hopefully I didn't just double my own Icelandic population! Hopefully there will be a good turnout of 4-H kids and I can get them interested in preservation. I am looking forward to it. I wish Kelly were going to be around that day to keep me company but alas, she has plans.

Here's the scoop.

Echo Valley Feed Store located on Nevada Street, Auburn is hosting a huge poultry sale for all the local breeders. Ducks, Chickens, small critters and who knows what else.

When: Saturday, June 18th starting at 10:00 - till about 2:00

Come join us and check it out, different breeds, show birds, laying hens, etc...... Even some exotics and small furry critters.

I came close to ordering the Ideal Surprise pullet special to put under my broody.... and then I had the thought.. what if she doesn't accept them? So I'm just going to kick her out of the coop after she's set on golf balls for three weeks. Can't believe I would even consider it... I'm chicken crazy. I saw some baby roos at the feed store today but decided against putting those under her.


I may have to change Goliath's name... I've almost decided that Goliath is a she, even though she's bigger than all of the rest of the Icelandics. Kathy, are you certain that one of your Delaware roos didn't sneak into your Icelandic pen? She looks like a huge Dellie!... but she came out of a LARGE white egg.

I've also decided that BOTH of the BRs are boys, even though one is MUCH larger than the other. Their legs are light so they have to be roos.... still trying to figure out the gender of the SLW. The NH is small but a PRETTY PULLET.

I love my two bluish Icelandic pullets, can't wait to see what they look like full grown.

And Mary, you are right, all of the pens/coop etc... were much more peaceful this evening.
And I made some money from the ten roos I rehomed.
