Icelandic Chickens

Mary I forgot to post that we lost an egg in shipping. The box was packed really well and showed no signs of damage but when I got to the bottom layer, one was a wet yellow paper towel inside it's bubblewrap jacket.

So, 39 eggs went into the bator

I was a bit worried about that. It was a lot of eggs. I couldn't put more packing between layers because then the lid wouldn't close. I should be able candle mine in a couple of days and check fertility. I shined a flashlight over the tray of eggs and can se early veining in two only. I'll try again on Wednesday.

That sounds like LisaNH here on BYC. Her name is Lisa Richards I believe. Good luck with them. She has nice birds from the pictures I have seen.

I hatched some of their eggs for Sommer. I still have one or two.

Mary,

I candled last night and only have 4 eggs developing.. There were some obvious clears, a couple of blood rings and some that looked like they started but quit before blood ring stage.. If you like, I can candle them again and get you an exact count of what.. I won't toss anything until this weekend just in case..

Dang! I think I am about to give up on shipping eggs. I have 30 that will be ready for candling in the next couple of days. I will verify if it is a fertility problem at that time although 17 of these eggs were the ones under found under the goat sleeping platform! If it is not a fertility issue I will ship you some more. I am sorry Shawn.

Wow, I've finally caught up after being gone for a few days! You guys can yak!

Took the camera out and got a few pics. We'll start will the Kella pic of the week......here she is with Krystal, White Java, and Kleopatra observing a piece of cabbage trimmings thrown into the yard.

And there she goes with the cabbage, with Kleo giving chase.

Jake, Here is "King" Audun today.......a stunning example of a lot of white AND rose combed (not that I'm biased or anything!):

His first chicks, that I'm positive are his, were born on 7/13, so I'll be able to tell you if any of them inherited this combo soon!! I'll try and get some close-ups of them and Kelly can tell us which are boys!!

Ok- I am pretty sure this is the chick I have from Frank and Lisa Richards. I think.

It seems to be fine Kelly. It's been helping it's mama dig a hole to China for two days now. Yesterday I made the ridiculous decision to open the doors so the two mama's and their babies in the silkie coop top and bottom could come out. Well, Skye's babies went into the bottom of the silkie coop and mingled with those babies. It was all out war with the mamas. Two of Skye's babies came out on their own but I had to use the net to retrieve the others. I would pull a chick out, give it to Skye and watch her reaction. She knew immediately when I tried to give her one that wasn't hers. She would peck at it and try to hurl it across the yard. So I would put it back and try another one. Eventually I got it right and both mamas settled down with their correct babies. I will wait a couple more days before trying that again. I just feel bad for the ones "cooped" up!

My son and his family arrived yesterday. It was so good to see them. We had a fun evening. We will have the whole day together today and then they leave for WA on Wed. and be back on Mon. We had an "unfortunate" incident with a radio controlled truck and the fainting goats last night that I will be posting a video of later.
