Icelandic Chickens

snaphu, Do you have pictures of your hens? Is Magnus your only rooster, or is the one behind him in the picture also with your hens?

I only had two viable eggs going into lockdown.. one pipped low and into a blood vessel earkt on day 20--didn't make it. I had just about given up on the 2nd one when this little guy decided to pop out on day 22.. He'll be an only child for about 3 weeks and then hopefully have lots of little sisters to take care of..

Oh no Shawn, that is too cute!

Hopefully a couple of those 72 eggs I sent you will hatch. In the meantime this little guy is going to drive you crazy.

FYI: I promised eggs to Shawn and got busy with houseguests and didn't send them. By the time I got around to it I had 6 dozen!

Some of them may be too old, some not fertile, some I took back from the broody several times a day and some were from the goat feeder out in the heat. This should be interesting. I think when I dumped 90+ eggs on Kathy she got 30 chicks or so. Some crested!

Keep us posted. I have 26 in the incubator due to hatch in 6 days. Hopefully they are all sold.

I am collecting now for a lady that bought eggs from my website, had great fertility (shipped eggs no less) then had a temp spike on Day 20 to 107 for several hours. None survived. She bought some more and is going to try it again. I'll be following these two hatches carefully!

They are very handsome roosters!! Is Erika the mom of the black triplets? Did the fourth egg make it?

Do you have a hen you can put it with? The dark around it's eyes is very interesting....you'll have to take pics as it grows so we can see the changes!!

So, you know how you feel when your kid goes off to college (moves away, joins the military, gets married, etc)?

That's how I feel tonight......I know it's a good thing, but I'm a bit blue nonetheless........... I sent 6 pullets and 2 cockerels to new homes today.........very, very good homes (they have Icelandic sheep and understand about the importance of keeping the Icelandic genetics pure) but it's still sad to see them go. The pullets were all daughters of Ari. One of the cockerels was Ari Junior (AJ) whom I've posted about here and the other was Baldur (Big Boy), one of only two chicks that hatched from eggs from Mary. I decided to let him go so that I could have a local source for new blood into my flock when I needed it. I kept Lil Sis, so still have one from Mary (not counting my original ones) in the flock. One of the families has two hens from Lyle Behl's stock so that will add some diversity to mine as well when the time comes. Just thought I'd share since I know you would understand.
