Autosomal recessive means it comes from both parents.....

Autosomal recessive: A genetic condition that appears only in offspring who have received two copies of an autosomal gene, one copy from each parent. The gene is on an autosome, a nonsex chromosome. The parents are carriers who have only one copy of the gene and do not exhibit the trait because the gene is recessive to its normal counterpart gene.

If both parents are carriers, there is a 25% chance of an offspring inheriting both abnormal genes and, consequently, developing the condition. There is a 50% chance of an offspring inheriting only one abnormal gene and of being a carrier, like the parents, and there is a 25% chance of the offspring inheriting both normal genes.

melissa, I did not notice any unusual smell from them.

I had three with fray this year. None of the three was a blonde chick at birth, all gradually got white, with splotches, as they got older. A male and female that were hatchmates and a female that was hatched three weeks later. All three were the progeny of a trio. The rooster from that trio was culled. I have not had another fray born, thus far, from the same hens with a different rooster. I have daughters from the original rooster and a couple of sons, time will tell if they carry the fray gene.

From Kathy's post, I will have say that at least one of my original hens must carry the recessive gene. They are both from the same flock so both could carry it.

Mary he is awesome !! What a beauty he is going to be !! Thanks for sharing this.

Melissa I dont think he has the fray gene, the feathers are intact, not frayed, I tend to think it could have been a combo of being picked on and nutrition, I expect that he will grow out with normal feathering.

Fray is a recessive, and it has to come from both parents.

I have a fray baby right now. I will try to get pictures today. Poor little thing is so skittish I don't know if I can catch it.

Jake, you think the brown baby is a cockerel? You wrote "he."

Mary - In this girl on the far left looks like Briet (or rather Briet looks like her). I really hope Briet gets that poofy crest. (if the boys can quit holdin' on to it for balance
