Sherriff--I did a quick and dirty candle on the Icelandics. All of the extra-large eggs were infertile. Maybe two of your older ladies are (not?) turning up their tail a the yound roo?

Mary she may have the infection it the actual 'bone' of the foot, if so a very strong antibiotic will do it, that happens frequently with toe frostbite, the necrotic tissue of the toe or foot heals but there remains the infection in the bone that can be routed, I would check with a vet for the strongest antibiotic you can find.

Kate losing a child is 180 out of the natural order of things. Children should replace us, I dont know of anything harder either. Peace, and value her memory . She was a blessing to you while she was with you.

Well about 3 days ago, I had an Icelandic go broody. Hopefully she pulls through. I think she is on 10 eggs.
So far she has only been getting up to eat when I feed. Then shes back on them.
I have not seperated her, but moved her from the double-wide community nest box into a bigger/deeper tote with pine shavings to help keep the eggs under her. In the nest box she was more open to the freezing air at night and I was worried about her/and eggs getting too cold.
here she is lastnight when I went to close up the pup door. All tucked in

This is my first time having a Broody.

You lucky duck Boston. I love broodies - raising babies is so much easier with a broody, plus nothing is sweeter than seeing a momma hen with her babies.



I survived the night with a bunch of 12 year old boys in my house. I had LOTS of coffee this morning.

Now I have to bake desserts to go to my grandmothers house tonight for Christmas with them.

And that hen is so BEAUTIFUL... I hope Blau is the daddy of her eggs. Such a gorgeous blue.

Yeah, if you can keep her away from where the other hens lay, you have a better chance of hatching out the eggs. If they are knocking her off the eggs or laying extras in it then it becomes a problem. Mark all of the eggs she has now so that if others do lay in her box you can remove the new ones. I think Mary actually ended up building broody boxes to put in her coops to separate the broodies and then she could feed and water them right in the box.

Can you hang a 250 watt heat lamp in there, just to take the edge off of the cold in the coop??... I know this week you'll probably see temps in the low teens up there with all of that snow on the ground.

How exciting! A broody Icelandic!

I noticed that the last batch I hatched too. But Isi had not been mating while molting and the older girls are "his" girls so that probably explains that. Hope you get at least some.

Beware, I just came home from shopping and I have one Icelandic hatched and two zipping. Hatch day is Tuesday!
