Icelandic Chickens

I had several hawk attacks earlier this spring. I heard the same thing about running a large dark bird with your other chickens. I turned my two Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys loose with the free rangers and haven't lost any birds for the longest time. The BBB have dark brown colored backs so probably look blackish from above. There are still plenty of eagles and red tail hawks around but they just are not be trying to get the chickens now. They obviously must not know those two big fat turkey girls can only waddle not run or fly and couldn't hurt a flea LOL.

We have the big blk orps too and they are big weenies and run from hawks (not that I blame them lol). The turkeys are dumb and just stand there.
The hawks could probably take them out ..they just don't know it. We have both bald and golden eagles here as well as the big black vultures (turkey vultures) that sit up in the pine trees and eyeball the chicks. Nothing (birds of prey) really seems to bother them with the turkeys out for some reason. The Broad Breasted Bronze are like turkeys on steroids..just huge. They are really made just for getting fat quick so you can eat them but we fell in love with our 2 turkey hens so they are spared from the fryer for now. I think if we didn't free range them they would be too fat to live or walk. I would like to get some heritage turkey next just haven't decided which kind yet.

Mary, So sorry to hear about the hawk attack and the Swedish Flower eggs

Dar, Glad to hear your walk went well. Exercise is good....don't over-do it!

Went back out to gather eggs knowing that today is Kola's day to lay an egg. Somehow, she got back in and laid in the nest box.

I think Icelandics are smarter than the average chicken.

They are very talented escape artists who remember how to get back in........my other chickens that managed to "escape" never could get back in without help.
