Icelandic Chickens

Fridrik is good. As for the roo, I had a friend from Iceland by the name of Birgir. Everyone called him "Biggie" because he was rather tall and serious-looking (but actually quite kind).

I really like that. ''Birgir''

Yep, it suits him!

We are having some bitterly cold and windy weather here. The forecast is calling for it to be 7 F here tonight. I left the heat lamp on in the Nursery/Hospital corner for the molting SLW who only has about a third of her feathers. I will turn it off in the morning so they (Elska and Brella) don't get too used to having it. It is suppose to warm up to 28 F tomorrow and into the low 40s by Thur/Friday. I still got 10 eggs today (8 Icelandic, 1 from my white Java and 1 SLW), so the cold doesn't seem to be bothering them too much!

Here is the Kella pic of the week taken the end of last week....the grass is more on the brown side today...Kleo and Audun in the background.
And speaking of Kleo...she's the one that went broody the end of Sept..........and I let her keep her two eggs......which she hatched.....and raised for all of 3 1/2 weeks......and then ditched them....

....and I had to stick them in the Nursery/Hospital coop with injured Brella because they were too young to be out in the main coop without a momma.....well,... last night she was on a nest........I put her up on the roost........tonight she was back in the nest box......

...back on the roost she went. She WILL NOT be raising anything until the weather is warm enough for them to be on their own if she decides to wean them early again. Anyway, here's Kella................

Have any of you had a BUFF colored Icelandic chick? I can now see some dark feathers forming, but it looked just like a BO chick.

Laree hatched it out, it's HUGE and it has as many feathers on it's legs as I've ever seen on any cochin!

I know, I know.. pics... Sometime before the end of the week. It's getting used to me picking it up and holding it... I do so because I keep scratching my head thinking, "Can this really be an Icelandic?"... It came from Boston's eggs and I don't know if any of it's parents had that much leg feathering.

I hatched a pair of Icelandic last summer that were a buff color, the female developed into a light-colored buff columbian and the male was the same with some black flecking on the breast feathers with a faded wing triangle. I do believe that both the columbia and darkbrown alleles are absent in the USA Icelandic population. Columbian-colored Icelandic do exist in Iceland and Canada, however, and possibly Europe.

Hi everyone,

I have been told by a man who is very passionate about the Icelandic breed that back in the day, the Icelandic people culled all white (or mostly white) chickens as they thought of them as inferior. Can anyone clarify if this is so or have any further information on this?

Thanks,

Ryan
