Icelandic Chickens

Boston, Here is another then and now for you. This is Bjarthur, one of my other cockerels.
He was an only chick for Asta's first hatch (had just given away eggs when she went broody).
First two pics are at one day old.

He's behind Asta, trying to avoid the flash! Great camo!

Ten days old.

Three weeks, learning how to dust bathe

Two pics at five and a half weeks

Three and one half months

Now

Great pictures Mary. I love this color pattern. It looks a lot like my Iowa Blue coloring. Bjarthur, Dreki, and the girls are settling in fine. They are in temporary pens until their new pens are finished. I am getting eggs!

Doppa must have been squeezing her legs together because as soon as she was in the pen, she jumped in the nest and laid an egg.

Hello Icelandic chicken fans,

I've been lurking for a long while, because I didn't have much to say. But now I DO have something to say. I took advantage of Sheriff Mary's Icelandic Eggs sale, and should have two dozen eggs arriving sometime next week! I am beside myself with excitement. My husband lets me do whatever I want with the chickens. What can I say, for some reason he trusts me. He really shouldn't. But I digress.

I told him about the Icelandics and for the first time HE is interested in chickens too! He likes that they are hardy, good foragers and still have the instincts needed to reproduce without help. He also thinks they're pretty and loves that we'll get a lot of variety in feather coloring without having to keep tons of different breeds.

So hello all. /wave

Thanks Jim....I'm glad to hear they are settling in!

Things here are in a "state of confusion"!

The flock doesn't quite know how to act, the pullets that were in with Dreki won't eat with everyone else at morning treat time...I have to feed them in the "kennel" run that was the breeding pen where he used to eat with them or they won't eat....the pullets that hung with Bjarthur are waiting around the coop for him to go with them out into the "open"...no one has been ranging around the house......time will smooth it all back out. The good news is that all three broodies have stuck to their nests so eggs will be doled out from the incubator tonight or tomorrow night.

I see at least 3 chicks. I can't keep bothering her...... she's busy concentrating and is "in the zone." I think I have 8 or 9 Icelandic eggs from this clutch in the incubator. As they pip I am putting them under her (there are 2 pips under her now).

Kathy, what a sweet momma! How many will you let her have? It's great you can add them back like that...I've never tried that....just give them all to them at once.

Adorable Kathy.

I got a couple pictures of mine today also. This boy is going to be stunning! Sorry he decided to step in poo before I took his picture.......classy, huh? With his crest, he reminds me of David Bowie.

This girl is pretty and so sweet.

Kelly, they are stunning! The boy has coloring similiar to my cockerel Boi but Boi's crest isn't nearly as "upright"!!

The pullet is very pretty....she'll need a very feminine name! I love her "fishnet stockings"!!

Welcome and congratulations!!

Many of us got our start because of Mary and her bewitching us with the Icelandic charm! I look forward to seeing how your hatch goes and seeing pics of your new flock.

Thank-you for the welcome. I am so excited. I've been slowly selling off my current flock to make room for these guys. It is darn hard seeing them go. Not only do I miss their personalities, but I miss their eggs too! I had 35 hens at one point. Sold many of them. I owned only 9 hens this morning. Then one got herself hit by a car this afternoon. She's been playing in the road for weeks. She almost got hit yesterday too. *sigh* Hard to be excited and sad all at once.
