Icelandic Chickens

Didn't get stung yet, but it's weird having them fly around you. I probably smoked them too much, but I was nervous. I did find out that you can't feel anything with the gloves and it's hard to grip the frames. I think I'll try the rubber cleaning gloves next - not ready to go bare handed like the experienced beekeepers.

I'm not sure. I forgot to ask- I was more worried about the particulars for getting them home and installed in the hive. We got them from a beekeeping store.

Is it normal to have about 15-20 bees just hovering in front of the hive? I expected them to be flying in and out, but some just appeared to be hovering this afternoon.
Bees hovering in front of the hive is normal. They will learn what their home looks like, and that hovering can be part of their orientation.
Beekeepers with more than one hive will often paint them different colors or put different symbols on the fronts to help with this.
After a hatch you will see a large group of bees on an orientation flight. It is something that will become very recognizable, and a joy to see.

So glad you are home, and so very sorry you were treated so badly! Tonight I experienced the same thing, only on the other side, I sweet guy I took care of, layed there for an hour and a half while we waited for the doctor. I am a cardiac catheterization nurse and we help the doctors open clogged arteries. Most of our Doctors are very prompt,, but sometimes there is an emergency, (that should be communicated), and a few just disappear for an hour with no explanation ! Also with the sedation....I also sedate patients, but I can't give anything without the doctor ordering it....again, most of our doctors want their patients comfortable and sedate accordingly, but unfortunately a few seem to think they don't need much. I hate having to sit with a patient who is in pain or uncomfortable and be helpless to do anything for them, I would like those physicians to experience it and see how they like it! I would encourage you to send a letter to the hospital complaining about the treatment, believe me, if the management sees a trend, they will do something about it. I love my job,and I believe for the most part, we do a great job,, unfortunately, some bad apples should either change, or be forced out of the profession!.
Well I am home. Going to go lay down as the last thing they did before I left was give me pain medicine. The entire day was an ordeal complete with being placed facedown on a hard x-ray procedure table, prepped, covered in sheets and lead blankets, IV running, and the doctor does a disappearing act for one and a half hours! He finally came back when they called him to say I was leaving. Then I thought the medicine they would give me would knock me out and I would not be in pain. Oh no. He barely gave me anything. I was awake the entire time. The recovery room nurse didn't believe it so she checked the records and I got 5% of the normal dose!

But the good news is I am doing pretty well and walking normally. The only pain I have now is muscle pain from being up all night with charlie's horses in my calves. I am really hopeful and really tired. Later! Thanks again for all the well wishes.

Mary

Mary sure hope that you are feeling better today, hold off on the soccer games for a day or two !

Kelly enjoy your bees, I love them, forget them flying around you, thats what they do, just enjoy them, dont forget to feed them ! It takes a bit to get the new hive going, feeding them will help a great deal, you got just a few workers doing a big job. I had hives for years, got stung only once or twice when one got caught in my clothing. It doesnt take much smoke, it really doesnt, I had Italians, hard workers, but hear a lot of good things about others, go with whatever you like, they will like you, just move quiet and normal around them.

Yep, they have a feeder on the hive. Clover and farrow are in bloom right now and the blackberries will be flowering soon, so they'll have lots to get the hive going.

I didn't spot the queen, so I'll be eager to open the hive up next Thursday and see how they are doing. No hovering this morning outside the hive, but it's still cool out. I did see a few bees heading out.

The orientation flight sounds neat. Can't wait to see it.

Look what I got today! BEES!

I had to put the bees from the box into the hive. The sound you hear when you open the box is freaky - they are loud.

It's close to level, but it's in a dip, so it looks really tilted in the picture. (and my son took the picture)
How Fun. I have always wanted to have my own Bee's. The local Bee Man keeps his Bee's on my land. It is amazing!!!
Congratulation!!!! Lots of Yummy Honey

Kathy! Kelly thought you might shout my name out all in capital letters again including my last name like when I sent the emu eggs! She said if you knew my middle name you would have included it too!

For those who don't know what the heck we are talking about I donated 12 Isbar eggs to thebirdguy's chickenstock. Taz won the raffle and because she can't have any more breeds (

) she decided Kathy should have them. So I shipped them to Kathy without verifying if she was ready. But, in my defense, I did PM her a tracking number after I sent them.

I also tossed in four little cream legbar eggs, one a pitiful little torpedo egg, for Kathy to test hatch. I take personal responsibility for derailing Kathy's downsize plan and forcing her to take a second job.

My bad.

Edited to say that after careful consideration, I actually think it is more Taz's fault than mine.

I thought about that before I offered them to her. I even told her I was worried she would say no, since she just downsized so there.

Now, you did send her some legbars so that increase is allllllllllll on you.
