Icelandic Chickens

Jake, my little mama is a cream legbar, not an Icelandic.

The only Icelandics I have now are Isi, Lukka, and a little funky feathered baby she is is raising from the last hatch. (not from her egg, she was already broody when they eggs were laid) It is a boy so it will be going to Farmer Fred soon.

Mary,

I did a quick candler to the top of the egg last night on the Icebar eggs (day 5), clear veining in 14 out of the 16!

Quote: I'm certainly not discounting them yet, it's still early on. I was just excited to find strong development in them. I was hoping it would go this way since they didn't have to go through the shipping process.

However, you should have seen the inside of my car when we got home. The little Icelandic chicks (particularily the white one) were scratching and kicking shavings out the front door of the crate all the way home. There was probably a quart of shavings scattered everywhere. The next day I went for a fast drive with the top down on my car so that most of them could just blow out without me having to pull out the vacuum

Thought I'd post a picture of Bara, who hatched from eggs The Sheriff sent me last May (Audun in background).
I love her coloring and feminine look....
Wow, I am impressed at how beautiful this hen is! Do you have pictures of her as a chick? I have some of Sheriff Mary's chicks and I wonder if any of them will look like Bara!

Well now that I have a few Icelandic eggs set under a Broody Game hen (along with a few Americauna eggs) I can hardly wait till they hatch to see what will come out of the Icelandics that I have, I am hoping to see some spangled colors and top knotted ones! As most of you may know I love chickens and have and still do raise Game fowl, I have several breeds of Game fowl that I try to breed as true to type as possible, I currently have Toppy Game fowl, Pumpkin Hulsey Game fowl, Red Claret Game fowl, Red Quill Game fowl and Barred Dom Game fowl that I am working on breeding true to type. I love chickens (and birds of any feather) and I am drawn towards the odd or rare or different color patterns in chickens, my favorites being the Blue and Crele colors patterns. I did end up with a pair of Blue Golden pattern Icelandics, they are beautiful. I will help in any way I can, if I can, I am working on a large pen to put Icelandics in so they can have more room and I can rotate cock birds into the hen flock to get more diversity in my flock, I should be acquiring 3 more Icelandic hens form a friend moving to Texas and not able to take them with him, his birds came from Kathy in Mo as did some of mine along with a few from Notafarm Mary, Thank you for getting me started on the Icelandics, I do enjoy them, Lynn in Okla.
