Icelandic Chickens

My Icelandic chicks are four weeks old now and they are certainly little bundles of energy, more vivacious than any other breed I've had. Each chick is different and there are two comb types among the six chicks. I love the diversity.

None of them appear to have abnormal feathers. Does the fray problem show up with the first feathers, or does it happen later?

Good question, I was wondering that myself. Don't forget to post pics of your chicks!

These chicks are the hardest to photograph. I'm used to taking my Silkies and putting them in a photogenic spot and they pretty much just sit there, posing. These Icelandics are very different birds. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

Sheriff, thank you for putting that BBS genetic chart up. I copied it into a word document so that I wouldn't lose it. I've got two Wyandottes I'd like to breed at some point, but I was wondering what their babies might look like. The male is a gorgeous dark blue, and the female is what I think is a splash...........She's black with random white patching on her face and wings. Exciting stuff.

Okay, got another question for the experts here. And sorry in advance if I seem to inundate you guys with pictures of the same two chicks. I'm supposed to be getting a third chick next week.

One of my Icee chicks has a comb that I like a lot. However, I'm not sure what type of comb this classifies as. Can anyone help me figure it out?

I'm pretty sure he's a male, since he's got that pink coming in on his face. I'm tossing in a couple of pictures of his brooder mate, since I'm starting to wonder if she's still a she (I'm a worrywart, sorry) Noticed today that her wattles are pinking up.





Don't do it to me, Gerti! NO! I need at least one girl, as much as I love boys, lol.

I have not seen anything like this "Fray" issue you peeps are talking about. I have hatched about 60 Icelandics I lost about 10 of them to the cold fronts that come through every now and then, like the one that came through 2 weeks ago, it was 22degrees and froze alot of the younger ones, I was out of town. But otherwise I have not seen this with any of mine.
I originally had 10hens and 2 Roo's which are the parents of all the other 30+ 2-6 month old ones I have still alive.

My NYD hatch ended up with 9 roo's and 5 hens... Some of the Roo's are lookers, but I do have a favorite one, I will need to get some pics after I get their new run finished.
I havent hatched any Ice's in a couple months but I have 2 broodies sitting on eggs right now though.
I had to slow down because I didnt have enough coops built.... I am slowly working on that though
Its being built along with fences for a calf soon, a 12x36ft horse barn and getting and learning about Honey bee's not to mention the goats kidding and planting our garden two times because of the cold front that killed it the first time.
its been busy on the Bryce Family Farm in Heber AZ but I wouldnt want it any other way. I simply love to work.

Since you got your flock from Mahonri - I wonder if he got his eggs from Mary prior to her bringing in birds from Lyle's line?

I took the chance and let my welsummer broody out yesterday afternoon with her chick. (her previous chick was killed by one of the hens the 2nd day) I segregated her and gave her some eggs from under another broody. She's looking raggedy because she ended up sitting for 2 months. Her new chick is 9 days old now. I was gone most of the day and I was super worried about the chick.

HEY EMU PEOPLE, you know who you are!! I was just perusing all the EMU products at Zazzle.com. I had no idea Emu's were so popular. They are on aprons, Tshirts, you name it.

I was thinking however I have seen much nicer photos on here. Maybe Mary, Kathy, Daron etc. could have Emu products offered on Zazzle, or similiar sites. Also googling "plush emu toys," found a ton of them some even from Australian sellers - but wow shipping charges etc. are extreme. What great prizes they would make for Mary's contests - hint , hint.
