I'm so sorry Kathy.

I've lost 2 of my Icelandics as well, both pullets. Both flew out of my run, which is not covered. One my dog unfortunately "played with". The other I don't know what happened, just *poof* gone. But I do know she got out and has been several times. They do well here as long as they stay in the run............but when they get out, they take their chances with all the wildlife around here.

ok this batch of young chickens seems different than the rest I have added to the flock.
I have 1 young Icelandic Rooster and 1 blue and 3 black Ameraucana (ugh most look like roosters too) that are about 7 weeks old. well I lost count but probabaly close. They have been out with the big kids during the day for about a week and sleeping in the grow up coop I built. I want to stuff them in the big coop at night soon too so I can move my 3 to 4 week old batch to the grow up coop and attach the run they are currently in to the coop my others are in.
My question is the flock I am moving seems much more like push overs than the rest. I am just worried that they may get really picked on. They have been looking at the big chickens for about a month now because there 15 x 25 run is attached to the large yard so they can see each other through the fence.
This is the age I have done it before and it has gone well. My other batches just have not been push overs. Just need to get the young kids moved up and thinking of just doing the survival of the fitest.

Any ideas?? Seeing how you all have been doing this longer than I probably???

well I put them in the coop with the big kids. all seems well. they are hanging out in the nestboxes.
my younger 2 1/2 and 3 week olds are now in the 3x3 grow up coop and I attached the run that they had been in that was in the garage. I put my 75 watt plant light in the coop. so now they have the coop and the 5x3 run.. they were so happy today. even know they where hot. Have to get more chick vitamins at the feed store tomorrow. I like to use it in all my chickens water when it is this hot

Mine never got bullied and they have been in the coop with the adults since they were 5 weeks old. (through screening for a little over a week, then out in the coop with them) They are smart birds and know who to get away from.

yeah it is funny watching them . the young ameraucana;s did not seem to mind the older ones much. they have been out with them for a week or so during the day so they know each other. I was more worried about my smaller icelandic but he seems to be quicker than the rest.

That's how I do it too.. I don't usually have any trouble either... The younger chicks seem to hangout together...sometime one of my little guys will think it big stuff and hang with the older ones... Every once in awhile a few feathers get plucked. They seem to work it out

Lord have mercy it was HOT today! I helped neighbor Nikki with her garage sale which she had at my house. Too difficult for cars to turn around at her house. We were out by the road in our little orchard under the fruit trees. She did pretty well for such a hot day and the day before Father's Day. Stuart and Louis were so nosey they wouldn't leave the fence all day. Poor babies were so hot. We kept hosing them down and I took a bucket of water out to them. The girls were smarter and stayed in the shade unless something very interesting was happening.

Tomorrow I am taking a day of rest as much as I can. I really need it. Michael will be with his daughters most of the late afternoon and evening. My sister and I celebrated Father's Dy with our Dad on Friday. If I had bon-bons I could lay on the couch and eat them all day.
