Garden orb weaver. Yours is a camouflage colored one. Wow. Interesting looking thing.

looks similar to the christmas spiders we get here in aus. Only christmas spiders have pointier bumps and are red, yellow and black.

Wow, that may be it! I never figured it for an Orb Weaver due to its chunky body. I've always thought those had really long spindly legs. Thanks, Debi! Definitely has the pattern.

We've had plenty of Orb weavers around here and they're usually just small bodied and long legged. Bet this one is a female due to the size of it. The behavior of it sounds right, too. Mystery solved. Thanks so much!

Yours is probably a female since its closer to 24 mm kill it so it can't have babies LOL

I just read on wikipedia that there are 10,000 orb weaver species, it sounds like more of a class rather than a specific type
