ID This Spider for Me (WARNING! Don't Look if You're Squeamish!!)

It's definitely a female orbweaver (nocturnal) in the genus Eriophora (formerly Araneus). My guess is Eriophora bicentenarius, although the exact species would be difficult to determine without a close look at a male. This is a very speciose genus with members found as far away as Australia, like the one Debi suggested. Nice spider!

For those of you who enjoy spiders and would like to encourage them in their gardens in a CONTROLLED way, my favorite way to make them happy but not wal into their webs is to get old picture frames or old painting frames and either stake them or hang them near solar lights in the yard. They make their web in the frame and I'm not forced to walk through them.

I love Orb Weavers!!
