Idaho?

I'm thinking the same thing, lol=)

I had to laugh at your comment on the UT thread about being tempted by the chicks at the feed stores, even though you have a barn full of them at home... I feel the same way... it's kind of ridiculous, actually, lol... oh well, at least this addiction isn't bad for your health....

For any of you going to chickenstock this May... I am hatching a bunch of eggs this spring... kind of went crazy on the swap pages, plus some of the swappers are sending me chicks instead of eggs... soooo.... if you want something, I'm starting a list... I will be getting crested cream legbar chicks, russian orloff chicks (spangled). a variety of orpingtons (hopefully some lemon cuckoo and crele), and I will be hatching some welsummer, speckled sussex and a bunch of swedish flower hen eggs... also wheaten marans, but I am planning on breeding them, so I will keep them until I know for sure what I want to keep for my project, but still should have some extra. of course it will depend on how the hatches go on the shipped eggs, but I still should have a fun variety of chicks to choose from... let me know and I will hold chicks back from the ones that go to chickenstock...
You have my wish list, Mesha. Crele orps.....oh yeah....don't need any more breeds but I love those. Crele is my thing right now. It's a good thing the feed stores don't have anything in that color.

Daloorashens, how much would a couple Orpington Pullets be? My mom and I want to get a couple to add to the "asylum" as I have started to call it now. I hope I am able to go to Chickenstock, I was supposed to be going with my sister but she isn't sure now.

On another note, I finally got my new rooster in the "asylum" and put a partition up so the "bullies" wouldn't try to kill him again. I am going to fix up a makeshift coop for him to use just until it dries up enough (mother nature is sure taking her sweet time) to get the other coop over here from Caldwell. Aragorn loves his new digs but he freaks out if any of the other "inmates" gets within 6 inches of the chicken wire. Could he be traumatized from the previous attack a couple weeks ago, and that's why he freaks out? It is worrying me.
Also will he ever get over his fear of the other members of the flock?

The best way to get a bunch of territorial hens to accept a new roo is to put the hens in "his" coop. When you put the male in the hen's coop, it's a guaranteed fight with the boy on the losing end.

I set up the divider, got him on the otherside, set up our extra doghouse as a temporary coop until it dries out enough to get my brother inlaws truck into the pasture so we won't have to carry the coop very far through all this muck. It seems to be working so far but I will see if the proof is in the pudding in the morning when I go to let them out, I put 3 of the nicer hens (boy did they grumble when I moved them) in with him for added warmth tonight. Hopefully when I go to let them out he is still alive, fingers toes and anything else I can cross crossed

I would be interested in some Welsummers if you're not too far from IF!

Exciting news, looks like I'll finally be getting some chickens pretty soon. Someone in Rexburg is going to hatch some chicks for me. Blue Laced Red Wyandotte roo over Americuana hens. Should grow up to be pretty birds that lay pretty green eggs. :D

I don't know if he's here on BYC or not.

Well. I have friends in town over Chickenstock. Dang! I think I would be in big trouble with the hubs if I ditched out for it....

On a side note, lots of the Big R stores are getting chicks tomorrow or Wed. from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell. Yay for Big R buying local! Although I'm not sure if I trust a hatchery that has this description on their website of their Araucana....

"We now offer in our exotic standard category the Araucana (Americana), Silver Laced Wyandotte, Light Brahma, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Golden Campine, White Crested Black Polish and Blue Polish."
"Araucana

Araucanas, or the Easter Egg Chicken as they are commonly referred to, lay eggs in many shades of blue, green and pink. With the array of color these birds bring, in their feathering as well as their eggs, they make a favorite to add to any flock."

Errr.... There's no rumpless tufted in sight..... Those are just EE. Still will get a few though... Need more green eggs...

Well my week isn't starting out well. I got Aragorn in his new digs and he is still freaking out when they come within 6 inches of the divider I put up, I had put 3 of the hens in with him to keep him warm and for company and yeah that didn't go over well, so my OE project is on shaky ground right now and threatening to fall apart. I went out earlier this evening to shut them in for the night and the one Amerecauna I had hoped would get along with him had him by his neck feathers 2 inches off the ground and was shaking him with all she had, I have never seen myself jump over anything that fast as when I jumped over the divider, you should have seen how fast he ran between my legs and "asked" to be picked up, said hen got booted back over the bottom half (I left part of it unattached so I could open it to get in to feed him) and now Aragorn is by himself but safely put away in his temporary coop (extra dog house). Poor guy is so traumatized from the first attack, I think if I want my OE project to get off the I may have to get two new hens for him. Anyone know where I can get a couple young Amerecauna or at least EE pullets? Hopefully he gets over his "PTSD" soon.

How old is your roo?? Isn't he still pretty young?? you might just have to wait until he's a little bigger...keep him on his own side and gets established, then move the hens a couple at a time, into "His" territory, like Michelle was saying...

Still contemplating on prices for the orps... it will depend on what and how many I end up with, lol....

Susan... had to laugh at the listing from Dunlap... seems lots of hatcheries advertise like that... no wonder there's so much confusion about EE's vs Ameracaunas and Aracaunas!! The only one I've seen that outlines it a little more clearly is Meyer.....

Hiya, saw you were having introduction problems still and thought you could use some advice.

While he's small and young, your hens will be territorial and aggressive with him, which is why you use the wire to seperate everyone while they get to know each other. I know he may look lonely, but right now its best to keep him safe from the others.

Once he gains size, and the horomones hit, he'll be the one doing the chasing. No worries about that, or your project being in danger. Once the testosterone starts, lookout ladies!!

I got him from Pele (don't know her real name) and if I remember right she said he was just barely 3 months old, but I may be wrong on the age so yeah still pretty young. Waiting until he is bigger is an awesome idea, I thought he was big enough to where they wouldn't gang up on him but boy was I ever wrong. The look he gave me when he ran up to me after I got over the divider was "save me mommy". He is also scared of the temporary coop and refuses to go in it at night, I have to force him to go in it so I can put him to bed, my dad said it might be from when he was attacked originally and he views the new coop as a "trap". Also thank you for the advice Pele, it is greatly appreciated and I am going to wait until he is at least 5 or 6 months old before I try introducing anymore hens (new or otherwise). No worries on the Orps Mesha just let me know if you get any available, no rush. I hope tomorrow goes better because if today is any clue as to the rest of my week I may just hide under my covers until the week is over.
