Idaho?

Thank you for the idea for the dawn dish soap, I will pick some up from the store when I am down there next. Next on my list is getting a thermometer to put in the rubbermaid bin I have them in (I am cooking up a plan for an actual brooder pen for them, I just have to find the material's).
Mbleily they seem to be doing better now that I lowered the heat lamp (I put the light bulb back in it) down into the bin so thank you for the idea, next time I am at Lowes I am going to look for a smaller heat lamp bulb, the one my dad was letting me use was putting out too much heat for them.

If you have just a small amount of chicks, a 60w regular bulb will work in a fixture like this (indoors):
1000

You just lower it down enough to keep them warm, then raise it up a little bit each few days. It works for about 10 chicks or so, but if I have more than that they can't fit in the heat circle as well:)

I have 14 (8 are mine and 6 are my 4 year old great-nephew Ethan's)in a dark colored rubbermaid bin. I and my great-nephew like to do a growing project every year, usually it is plants but since I had chickens already he decided he wanted to raise baby chicks. I have a 75 watt bulb in an old ceramic coated heat lamp I used when I had a salamander years ago. I have it to where they can pass under it but am not sure if I should raise it up a bit or not.

If you have some sort of thermometer (aquarium ones work really well and are cheap :) ) you could put it in the center of the light ring, 95 degrees is optimum for newborn chicks up to 1 wk old, it can be up to 100, so long as they can move freely out of the ring if they feel warm.... then 90 degrees up to 2 weeks old, 85 up to 3 weeks old, room temp is usually fine after that, they will be noisy if they want a little warmth to snuggle :) Hope that helps ;) That picture is the height mine is at for 90 degrees with a 60w.

I candled and I have 12 that are for sure developing, 5 maran eggs that are to dark for me to see anything and 9 I am unsure of so I am waiting a few days and going to candle again. I was pretty excited tho to see that 12 were developing very well.

That is awesome! When are yours due?

I put some in lockdown tonight...b/b/s marans and leghorn/EE mixes :) air cells got pretty big on the EE's so I am crossing fingers! The marans are hard to see much here also...can only see the air cells and a nice full darkness on the other end, usually a good sign at least :fl

If have a rooster with my hens will their eggs be bloody? I want to have eggs to eat...but I have heard having a rooster will help them lay better.

Mine are 3/24. The marans had good air cells as did most of the others that I am unsure of at the moment. Might check again tonight on the ones unsure of or tomorrow. I'm hoping this hatch goes well as I won an auction on a FB page for some eggs and they are due to ship April 1.
