Idaho?

I am new to this site and to the chicken world so I have a lot of questions. I actually live in Nyssa, Oregon but know more about what is going on in Idaho then Oregon. I haven't got any chickens as yet but I am thinking about getting the Light Brahmas does anyone have that breed? I am planning about a dozen hens and a rooster for starters but first I need a place to put them. I live in the country with mini horses, riding horses llamas, goats with 3 dogs and cats. I would like to have them free range with a coop where they can nest at night.

I have 4 Light Brahma hens, they are very gentle, sweet, and curious. They are on the large size, I have read that there feed to egg ratio isn't that great but that really doesn't bother me during the warmer months see I free range. I also read that they only lay about 3 eggs per week, I don't know how true that is since I can't tell who is laying what in the nest boxes. Me personally, I don't know if I would get a mostly white breed again since they are always so dirty looking from dust bathing, but that really isn't that big of a deal. My favorite breed so far temperment wise are the Orpingtons, but I have only had chickens for two years and still have a lot of breeds I would like to try! Also keep in mind that the Light Brahma's have feathered feet, not sure if that makes a difference or not for you, but me personally I like the look of clean legs and feet.

I live in Nyssa, Oregon on the border of Idaho. about an hour from Boise I don't have any chickens yet but I am looking at Light Brahmas or Orpingtons I haven't decided which bred to go with. I don't if either one of these breeds would be good for a beginner or do any of you have a better suggestion I want to stay with the larger breeds.

After looking at the 2 breeds I have decided on Orpington now that I have a bred in mind my next project is a pen I have got a large 3 sided shed that is divided in half one half will be for my 2 does that I will be milking next year the other will be for the chickens. Chickens will be free ranged during the day but locked up at night Is there a problem with having goats so close to the chickens ? Right now the 2 sides are separated by field fencing I am concerned about lice that chickens can get? Should this be a concern?

Nooooooo! Now Star is apparently dying. What the heck is going on? Is this some sort of weird chick disease that I didn't notice with the other two because they were masked by other probable causes of death? She would have been 6 weeks old tomarrow so it isn't like she's still this fragile little thing. But she was acting normal this morning and now she's acting tired just like Patience did and is fading really fast. She was awake and peeping but not wanting to stand when I started typing this, now she keeps falling asleep. My 5 year old is holding her now. She was in her brooder so there is no possible accident that could have hurt her this time.

This was the one I hatched, so I'm extra sad. Also now that we no longer have any chicks, my husband probably is going to take his time deciding to make the 2 hour drive to Idaho Falls to get more.

hopefully he decides to still make the drive. So sorry to hear about Star possibly dieing. From the looks of it there will be lots of cute little fuzzy butts to chose from if your husband decides to still go. I had a full grown hen do that mysteriously and I was heartbroken.

I am so sorry I wish I could help you the only thing I can come up with is a virus because of loosing your other chickens or possibly drastic changes in the weather which is really hard on all critters. Have you changed feed?
same brand of feed just a new bag. This is all I can think of.
