Idaho?

Well I'm a nerd. The orange one is now Sweet Gypsy Jane and the cochin that pecks me before she'll let me pick her up is Dinah...in case anyone doesn't know, those are songs by the Temptations...refer to the box. Lol

Hey everyone!!

pics to share from Chickenstock :) LOVED seeing all of the good lookin birds! Got a bit pre-occupied with watching and listening so I didn't remember the camera very often. HAH!

My son, Daniel. He had a great time running around and looking all the different breeds. Even got him to sit through the "Basic" class taught by Lance in the morning.

These are the babies we came home with. All of them made the 5 hr trip just fine. 2 BBS Orpingtons from rfunnyfarm (Thanks for keeping them toasty, Cathy!), Daniel picked out 3 from Thebirdguy (AKA Shawn): a speckled sussex pullet, can't remember what the smallest with the leopard spots is (shawn help? I didn't write it down and that was a long drive home, lol) and a mystery chick that looks suspiciously like another sussex (yay!)

Yes, it was quite the trip for us. but it was great seeing everyone and putting faces to names!! Next year, i propose we use the other side of the barn for a BYC meet and greet before the event (with plenty of photo ops!)

Put the word out and mark your calendars for next year folks (Sat May 3rd)! Lets help this event grow!

So I'm new to chickens and I've gone a little crazy, always wanting just a couple more! Here are pics of some of my chicks haha

Dark Brahma Bantam I picked up at chickenstock, her name is Ruth

Slash Orpington Cockerel picked up at chickenstock, havn't decided on a name yet.

BO (Hildy), Red Sexlink (Clary), and Black Orp (no name)

Alejandro, blue wheaten Ameraucana roo

So glad they are doing well! i was worried about all the traveling and everybody making it home ok. So good to hear! Your frizzle should lay blue or olive, the turkens lay brown or tan (usually big), the Wheaten marans lay dark brown nice glossy type eggs sometimes speckled. Glad you like the babies! I miss them, I am such a chick a holic it is so hard to say goodbye to the little ones lol, it sure helps alot to see them when they grow up and know how they turned out. Knowing how they lay too is fun then it helps me know which places were good sources to get chicks.

Squeaky--the hatch date was Friday 4/26. That darker one was huge when they came, I am hoping that means they came from, and will lay, big eggs

Mandi- the turken was hatched with the EE's 4/26, the frizzle around 4/16 and the WMarans 4/18
Thank you for the hatch dates, now I can keep track of how old they are without having to guess on when they were hatched

. For a bit I thought the maran baby wasn't acting like she (I am crossing my fingers for a pullet when "she" gets older), but after I showed her where I had the electrolyte water and she got a couple drinks of it in her she perked right up, ran over to the circle of red light from the heat lamp and promptly fell asleep, she loves being in with her new friends, I love the color variation on her wings it is gorgeous.

I love your new chickies, they are so cute, especially the dark brahma.

I have two questions. First, when you're incubating, what is the temp tolerance? Is give or take a degree ok? I notice my incubator with fluctuate between 99.5 to 100.5.

Second question, Does anyone in SE Idaho have a Buff Orpington roo that needs re-homing?

For temperature tolerance, it's better to be a bit low than too high. I'll let mine go down to 98 at lockdown in the one I can adjust and they do great. For days 1-18 I prefer that the temps don't go above 100 but a short period of higher than the recommended 99.5 isn't a big deal. If your incubator likes to go up a bit high, just maintain a lower humidity, say around 25 to 30% for days 1-18.

Ok, so its ok to be a little cooler than too warm. Is a half a one degree going to make that much difference? I'm hatching Coturnix quail eggs.
