Idaho?

Hey, I live in Caldwell & bought 9 chicks at Dunlap's last year & 1 this year. None have had anything done to their beaks. I've also bought feed, grit, pine shavings & other supplies at Dunlap's & never seen a bird older than a couple weeks. I bought my Araucana pullet (1 week) about 3 weeks ago & that was their last hatch for the season; none left now. I would call Dunlap's & ask about the beaks. They are a family business & very reputable & extremely helpful. I think the guy is lying & I feel bad for the hens. I have heard of the beak clipping when birds are in overcrowded conditions to stop feather pecking.
ya I am practically positive he was lying cause one of the hens I got from him was suppose to be a white sex link hen and I found out no one has ever heard of them. so she has to be something else not sure what just know she don't crow and she is supper sweet to us her beak is growing back out to what looks almost normal but the 2 brown leghorn their beaks I don't think ever will. I have a friend that traded me a RIR hen for the 2 Brown leghorns. then I bought 1 RIR from her. she lives in Nampa and is a sweet person. My grandpa always bought from dunlap and I never heard of them doing that to the chickens so I don't think they did it to their beaks but ty for letting me know.

I have some Blue Swedish ducks, Blue & black copper marans, Blue laced red Wyandottes, blue egg layers and some Chinese geese and several other miscellaneous types of chickens. They have become so much fun.

I think the blue birds a beautiful. Are your blue egg layers laying big eggs? I am not real familiar with what color eggs and what size eggs each type of chicken lays..

Fun flock! i love the blues. I have a little blue olive egger I am hoping is a girl. I have always wondered about geese....do you keep them in a pen or do they just free range, and how do you keep them in you yard? We had a neighbor with geese and they just stayed in her yard, I could never figure out how she kept them from flying away.

Birdguy, hope the little roo made it home ok! Forgot to tell you he and his girlfriend were named Gloria and Meathead, (from "All in the Family") haha :)

Michelle, my GCM is in the nest this morning, yay! She is getting so tall! She is my tallest girl by far. Very sweet girl, I am so glad I have her!

I have a fenced yard and the geese just stay in. I do have one that can squeeze out of the 6x6 mesh on the fence, but she stays close. They are "mowing" my grass for me. I just throw them some scratch every now and then, but mostly they eat the grass and some weeds.

ok this is the third time I am trying this but here is a picture I took of her she is the same size as my black sex links and she is suppose to be 11 months old

Yeah, maybe a white rock or even a wyandotte with that comb, it doesn't look straight, it looks like a rose comb?? They guy may not have been intentionally lying, he may just not have known, some people aren't as good with chicken breeds, that's all

hey I was wondering does anyone know if the light brahamas are just bantams or are they the regular size hens ? I would love to have one of them I think they are beautiful but they would have to be the regular size hen cause my hens would hurt a poor bantam.
The ones I have had were average layers, 3-5 eggs/week, and that was a hen that had molted once..., so not bad, really..., and I think they are sooooo pretty!!

Your morning funny:

Lisa, you crack me up!!!

Hi everyone, love to read all about everyone's adventures! I live in SE Idaho and have had birds since last summer. They are so fun.
Welcome to you and all the new peeps!!

Boy summer has been just nutso at my place!! Lots of stuff with the kiddos, really, which has made me have some patience in watching some of my birds grow out, lol...

BUT, I have some big decisions to make to thin things out a big... I'm going to sell a pair of Swedish Flower Hens, you pick the cockerel, lol, and probably some more of the legbars and a few miscellaneous started pullets which are brown egg layers.. can't decide between the rhodebars and the German New Hampshires I have right now.. soooo.... I need to take a poll...

Would you be more likely to buy straight run German New Hampshire chicks (good dual purpose bird) (would be cheaper) or an autosexing brown egg layer (the rhodebar) (would be more expensive) (still waiting to hear back from a few people that have them to find out about their utility or if they're just a neat autosexer...)

I have just started with chickens this year and have bought some from Dunlap as chicks. It is true that they don't debeak their chicks, but for their stock poultry (the ones they keep to produce their eggs) are debeaked. I recently bought some from Dunlap as they sell their adult hens, breeding stock, in the middle of May this year. I had asked for a red sex-link, and the girl that helped me there told me they have a white sex link this year. I got one of them and she is absolutely wonderful. They did tell me she was a "white sex-link." It is very probable the gentleman too heard the same information as I did when I bought my 12-15 month old breeding hens from them. My hen was debeaked, but she has had no problems eating and foraging for bugs or other treats, sometimes it just takes her a little longer to get them.

Lady Orchid - I am sure if you call them with questions about how the white sex link came to be they can tell you the genetics of it as someone else might use a different name for the chicken.
