Idaho?

I would suggest Black Australorps. They are dual purpose, very good layers with the right diet, and can be good meat birds as well.
I don't know if I can really stomach the thought of killing them...maybe. Would 2 of those and 2 Rhode Island Reds be good?

If you are getting them for laying you wouldn't have to kill them. They are just dual purpose.

The question is, what are you looking for in a hen? If you need some advice on breeds to get it's helpful to outline what you are looking for.

I'm not saying you have to kill them. It was a suggestion incase you also like eating chicken. You could make it so the Black Australorp is for egg only. It could work. I like my Black Australorps that's why I suggested them. I got 25 pullets 2 weeks ago. Rhode Island Reds I've had. They are good layers. Black Australorps I've had lots of eggs.

If I got chicks now, how long would I have to get a coop built?
