The bird that laid that is the one from Bonnie..... the only other pullets that could start laying anytime are the blue orp and the Marans BSL, the OE from Michelle isn't close at all yet, and my BA is only about 14 weeks old, so that's why I'm befuddled... My other OE lays big eggs, and so does the EE, they are good-sized hens that lay good-sized eggs... No, not going broody, I've had broody hens before and she definitely is not.... crazy eh??

Susan, sorry to hear about your rooster fiascos... those silly boys sure can be naughty sometimes!! I understand why you would say if you ain't layin, you ain't stayin=)

Where's birdguy?? He needs to put up those pics of his little piggies on here (they haven't gone to market yet) (

I'm killing myself with these jokes about the piggies, haha~!)

I think I need to call him and see if I can bring my kiddos by again to see those cute little things!!

oops, haha, somehow missed that he had posted them already.. aren't they cute??!?!?!

You are welcome to bring them over... they are getting cuter by the day... really fun to just sit and watch their antics.. good thing they lose the cuteness factor when they weigh a few hundred lbs!!!

Okay, all you chicken experts.... Question for you about eggs... I'm not familiar with what to expect for some of the colored egg layers... When I was younger, I only had brown and white egg layers... My OE pullet, with a straight comb, but muffs/beard and similar feathering to a wheaten ameracauna, a few very small feathers on her shanks, started laying olive eggs about a month ago. Then on Thursday, she laid the egg on the right and hasn't laid since (I figure she's taking a break, she has laid 5-6 x's/wk since she started) Is it normal for the color to change that much from one day to the next??

An olive egger can lay pale eggs sometimes. Their base color is blue/green with marans paint on top. If she temporarily ran out of paint, the egg could look like that.

How about sometime next week?? I work this weekend, and the first part of next week, and so DH took the gang to UT for some business meetings and MIL and SIL's will help watch the boys while I'm at work... I've never seen a baby pig in person... I bet they are adorable!!

Thanks Michelle!! That makes sense, especially since she has been taking a break since then...

Hope you don't mind my story from this morning... I was trimming the peas back and noticed a plethora of bugs under there, so I went and grabbed my BO (Maple), to come help with insect control... She had already laid her egg, so she was nice and calm... She figured out right away why I brought her out and gobbled up all kinds of grasshoppers, earwigs, spiders, potato bugs and a millipede! All while I was trimming away and lifting stuff over her head and stuff (I don't spray my garden with insecticide at all). In fact, she's still out there, hiding in the corn, hopefully gobbling up more grasshoppers. I've been impressed with what a great bird she is, very calm, great egg layer, and in the past has also been a great broody (hasn't this year yet) she and the bantam cochin chicks are the kiddos favorites. I'll probably keep her till she dies of old age, we'ev enjoyed having her around so much!

Isn't it nice to bring them into the garden! My husband and I did that the other day with two of our BO's, normally they cannot get to the garden as I am afraid they may eat my veggies before I get to harvesting them.

I'm sad to say we discovered last night we were missing one of our four BO's. They free range but are locked in a coop at night, so I guess it is to be expected, but I have become rather attached to them because they are so sweet. Also we do not name them or have a real way to identify them for that reason. I'm still very sad though! We put a lot of money into fencing our back half acre for the girls so the coyotes couldn't get to them. No signs of anything digging under, and the fence is at pretty tall, probably 6 feet. No signs of any feathers anywhere or a struggle, she is just gone. I'm hoping I come home from work and she will magically be back, but I doubt it, I'm sure something took her, now I just need to know what before I loose any more! The girls have never gone over the fence before either so I am ruling that out as well. My poor little girl!

Sorry to hear that Becca! Especially since you can't tell for sure what happened to her... I'll do crossies for you that she reappears tonite, she isn't broody somewhere is she?

So I had to go spray down the chickens, holy moly it is hot today.. they're all under the tarp I have up for shade buried in the dirt and still panting... they don't like being sprayed (with a light spray) but they are so much happier afterwards!!

Was wanting to go the the Bonneville County Fair and see the poultry, but I missed it yesterday, I guess, sheesh, missed the Bingham county one, too by one day... bummer, will just have to wait now for the State Fair, I guess! Do you guys know anyone with birds in the state fair, or anyone who shows their birds??

Not meaning to pry, Becca, but I was looking at your profile and noticed your pics of bird poop, lol... was one of your girls sick, and what did she have and is she better?? (hopefully, since the pics are dated Feb)

Okay Michelle, another question for you...

I have a blue orp from Azriel that I got at the chickenstock in May... I think she is a really pretty bird, she's getting really big and fluffy, but she has some gold looking leakage on her neck, just a small spot, not all over her whole neck... How does that happen?? Because aren't they bred by crossing black and splash orpingtons??

Still no sign of her, would a 22 week old pullet go broody at such a young age? We have looked high and low for her, I would think we would have found her even if she was sitting somewhere?

22 months or weeks??? If it's weeks, that does sound young...sheesh, I really hope she shows up for you!!

Oops! You are correct, I meant weeks! Sometimes my fingers type whatever they feel like...lol. I'll go back and edit it. Still no sign of her this morning. We do have hawks in the area, but over the last year or so they have never bothered the chickens before but that doesn't mean they haven't started!
