Idea for dealing with political & armageddon threads

My biggest pet peeve are when people make up titles to their threads for shock value, something really dramatic, that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of their thread, just to get you to open it.

I don't mind the shock value as long as the subject line actually has something to do with the subject!

It's the shock-value subject lines that are far off the subject that bother me 'cause I'll come back day after day and accidentally open that thread again (arrrgghhh

Exactly. If someone wants to talk about their personal problems don't make a screaming headline that makes it appear to be about chickens or something along those lines.
Then I open it and its about a fight with your husband or boyfriend etc.
I don't want to deal with drama when I am on a chicken forum, people should be more upfront.

Honestly? The majority of the time I come on here for chicken information/sharing. BUT, I like to have the freedom to check out a political thread once in a while, too. Our world is a little crazy right now in many different areas and people need to vent a little. What safer place to do so, than with people you at least share one thing in common with: in this case, chickens! I personally like to hear all views - even differing ones. They certainly don't make me feel all warm & fuzzy, but it helps me understand the different mindsets of people out there.

Why not keep the political threads open for people who can be polite while differing, and simply ban the rude ones? Put a disclaimer at the beginning of these threads with a couple of rules. Rude, attacking comments are to be reported & will get you banned.

The way it is now? With moderators jumping in at the first breath of "political" to lock it down like a prison? Seems a little controlling to tell people what issues they can talk about and what they cannot. It's a forum for people who have chickens in common, yes. But we still have other ideas running around in our heads, and issues in our daily lives. I'm sure it makes life a little more hectic for the moderators, but seems like that could be figured out too. Put a limit on amounts of political threads, maybe? One a day? Surely something can be worked out?

The threads you refer to make it far more "than a little hectic" for the moderators. It has been proven over and over that the threads never remain civil and the hurt feelings and bruised egos permeate the other sections and topics of the forum. So to prevent the infection from spreading we have found there is little choice but to cut it off early before it turns into a board wide war that most of the mods have seen and experienced on other forums.

This is exactly what we do. Threads stay open while they are civil and get shut down after they are reported and investigated. Sometimes we even discuss them in the private staff section. The disclaimer is in the rules.
* It is at our sole discretion to pre-screen, refuse or remove any users or content from the site.

This rule
* If a topic is closed or removed do not, under any circumstances, re-post the same topic or material. If you have any questions as to why a thread was closed or removed please contact a BYC staff member.
has been given a great deal of latitude with regards to political posts.

It may seem controlling to you, but this is a privately owned message board and as such is subject to the rules made by the owner. You can talk about politics, but there are many forums out there for that purpose and this is a chicken board.
Like kstaven says, it is more than a little hectic. We clean up a lot of threads so they can go on. Some are just too long and too full of rudeness to even try. It take a lot of work to clean up a thread of the rudeness and then clean up the posts referring to the rudeness and try to keep the continuity of the thread intact.

Sometimes closign the threads is the only way that "works out".

Thanks for your comments.
