Ideal MG discussion

From what I have read, MG is almost unavoidable for those of us with backyard flocks. If a wild bird enters your yard, there is a possibility your chickens will get MG. I can't comment about Ideal or any other hatchery or breeder, but if you are buying chickens to keep in your backyard, I don't see a reason to be too concerned about MG. It won't wipe out your flock.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've read the same about MG, that it's in most flocks. I don't believe it. It wasn't in mine until I brought it in and didn't practice simple biosecurity.

MG does kill. I had a 10% mortality rate from secondary infections. MG hits molting and young birds hard. It also seemed to hit silkies harder than standards. To me it is a big deal being MG positive.

What about the chances of infecting other flocks? That was the main reason I decided to cull versus treat.

Finally, there are other diseases out there that do kill and wipe out flocks. They are transmitted the same way MG is. By practicing biosecurity against MG you may save your birds from something else.

That is why its such a great idea to quarantine your birds for at least 30 days or more to make sure they dont have any illnesses to pass down on your birds.

There is another diseas out there that mimics MG, starts with A.... and it pretty nasty and fatal to any birds.

I am very fortunate that I have not come across with any of the diseases in my flock except for the Spitzhauben pullet that has that genetic virus (she is now to a good home).

Lets hope most of us have MG at bay or MG free.

Redhen I plan on calling Teri after I talk to MD DOA, if these techs/vets whatever claimed that Ideal did have a MG problem there will be a report on file, which I highly doubt considering if any DOA would have done testing on Ideals stock it would have been the Texas DOA!!!

I know from a trusted source there has been communication on this. It's not my place to comment further but want to acknowledge that it's being addressed.

In my experience when CT Ag tested my birds they wanted to know where each one came from so they could track how diseases spread. If I had birds from Ideal that were positive the CT Ag would have taken my word on that and flagged Ideal. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see MD show infected Ideal chicks and TX not.

In MD, MG is not a reportable disease and may not be in other states. That's not to say that they did not trace it back to a hatchery.

This was copied from the MD Dept of Agric. web site. http://www.mda.state.md.us/animal_health/diseases/reportable.php

I'll hold the most of my comments until I talk to Ideal. But with a record of buyers with healthy birds, and the simple fact that the only way the disease can be traced back to Ideal is for them to be tested at Ideal. In the event a disease was discovered by one state agency that information would be passed to the other state agency for testing. As Ideal supplies large amounts of birds to the food industry this would be a major deal. The fact is anybody who has birds from Ideal the birds can contract MG after they are received, they are not disease resistant. Making accusations without proof(ag reports) is irresponsible, and personally if I ran Ideal I would seek legal recourse.
