Ideal MG discussion

MG is almost everywhere. I can't imagine any hatchery never having a run in with it. Several people I know have purchased chickens from Ideal that were MG free.

Now, in reality, the only way you are going to get MG from day old chicks is if it passed through the egg or the handlers are contaminated. This decreases the chance of MG by around 90%. Chicks born with MG will most likely not shed the disease until they develop symptoms, many days later.

Finally, chicks need to be brooded when you get them. If they have MG you will know it in under a month, probably much faster. Even chicks should be put into quarantine.

So, let's keep this whole thing in perspective. With proper biosecurity, even if Ideal does have some infected breeds, you can keep things under control.

I got my chicks from Ideal in January and they have all been healthy. I also just ordered more chicks from them...I'll keep them in the brooder for the first several weeks, but I don't expect any problems at all.

I received a total of of 19 chicks in my Ideal order this past March. I gave away all the roos, 2 of them recently and all 19 are healthy and thriving. I've been very happy with the flock and will continue to order from them in the future.

Nifty, I honestly believe that you do care and will treat all the same. But business is business and pulling the post until more info was available is good business. I was hoping that they would provide more information for us but didn't want them to think that your site allows hatchery bashing without confirmation.

Purple....I had 10 chicks of which 6 died within a month. All symptoms pointed to cocci and I do not consider that a hatchery problem. I have 4 left. What would be the sypmtoms of a less than month old chick with MG?

Another consideration is that a lot of people have MG in their flocks now but don't know it. Standard laying hens are very resilient to the effects of MG. Then a box of day old chicks arrives and are easily contaminated by the owner simply handling them after working in the coop. A few days pass and the chicks are sneezing and eyes are crusting.

I too have ordered from Ideal, and had no problems... I think we also have to consider that there was never any evidence of the notice from dept. of Ag... I'm sure there is more to this than meets the eye JMHO

Ideal is my favorite hatchery to order chicks from. I'm interested to know if this claim has any base. I last got chicks from them in November and I lost 1 Polish as a chick for no apparent reason (but you know Polish...) and I lost one full grown hen that came from Ideal to pneumonia out of the blue recently. (Had the dead hen officially tested.) The rest of my Ideal birds have been beautiful and healthy pet quality birds, no signs of MG or any other disease.

Sneezing, crusty or infected eyes, runny nostrils, shaking heads. MG doesn't kill many birds. Cocci on the other hand is present almost everywhere, lives forever(almost) and has a high mortality rate.

Thanks, none of those symptoms so I'll still go with cocci. I decided after reading so much about MG (especially your post) and other avain diseases that I would practice all reasonable bio-security including quarantine but I wasn't going to be paranoid about it. My hands are flaking from all the hand washing but I'm still going to the poultry show tomorrow (to watch, not show). I do plan on having my birds tested later on just so that I can be a responsible poultry owner.
