Ideal MG discussion

I completely agree with almost everything you just said. However, the stories are now out there and we are discussing them here and also defending Ideal, a hatchery known to be a good one. In my opinion this thread is doing a service to Ideal and it's customers. If this was happening to Meyers, my favorite hatchery, I would want to see a thread like this.

Hopefully Ideal will comment on this tomorrow.

I'll remind everyone that one of the nations largest hatcheries had an outbreak of a very bad disease last year but didn't come clean until thousands of birds were dead. Discussions of that situation among chicken owners here and other places protected a lot of people and got justice for many too.

I did contact them and they would not deny nor confirm. I personally have no opinion except that we have the right to know.

Some of my favorite chickens are from Ideal. I will continue doing business with them! In my opinion they are a great hatchery.

I also agree that they are a great hatchery and hope that we will receive some answers from them on Monday.

I agree this has been a good discussion. That is part of the wonderful thing about BYC is that most of the posters here are really informed, will gladly pass information on, set up pages/threads for good info (like dlunicorn and threehorses and purplechicken), or discuss things intelligently.

Thomas, I'm glad you called. I'm not surprised they didn't confirm or deny, because like was discussed in the thread, MG/MS can crop up anytime and if they get complaints, it takes time to do testing to confirm or deny. If they don't know, they can't say for sure. My own flock can get it at any time. If it happens, I will have to act. Any breeder can get this ... it just takes one contact. If they are good breeders they will inform those they've supplied chicks/eggs too once they know. If they aren't, they won't last long because word will get out.

I also think The Hoof and Hen Ranch did nothing wrong asking the question - its a good thread.

Ideal will comment. They normally always do once they have more info.

And just treat all your new birds as if they do have a disease, then be exceedingly happy when they turn out to be healthy. I'm getting a Roo soon from a fellow BYCr, and he'll be lonely in his little biosecurity enclosure until hes given a clean bill of health. But I do it because I love my chickens. I'm sure H&H asked because she loves hers.. and Thomas asked because he loves his....

Right. So far all we know (or think we know) is someone had a sick bird in MD and they bought that bird from Ideal. Even if that is confirmed, we still don't know when, where, or how it got sick.

The birds could have also been infected in transit. At some point they could have crossed paths with older, infected, birds that were being shipped or even a baggage handler that had cared for infected birds at their home earlier. After all the carriers of freight don't disinfect their equipment after each load.

i called ideal on friday but was 5 mins past their closing time

i was concerned also since i just recieved a shipment of chicks this past weds

i left my number for a return call so i hope to hear from them concerning this

either way i will still order from ideal

they have great prices and asstortments that i like

all my chicks go into a seperate brooder for 4 weeks anyways so if there is anything in them it will either kill a few or just go away

and with this hot weather i believe alot of us are losing some of our flock

so can be many variables involved we shall see if they call me tomorrow morning

Just got off the phone with Texas Department of State Health Services, they have not heard anything of such a nature. Contacted MD by the number fattie posted and one party is not at work and the other will have to call me back(I do not expect to get a call). I have not talked to Ideal yet but this is taking on a fishy smell, or excuse the pun just another chicken poop rumor. When this is all said and done I wish that these rumors would stop, I would hate it if people did this to me, why should Ideal be treated differently?

Ideal Poultry is not MG clean, has never claimed to be and does not intend to be. NPIP does not require a hatchery or farm to be MG clean in the standard program, but does offer a separate MG program that we do not participate in. MG is a very common disease and is in most backyard flocks in the United States. Ideal Poultry supplies some breeders to most of the hatcheries in the United States therefore those flocks are also MG positive. None of the ‘big’ hatcheries in the United States are MG clean. If our customers who are MG+ (again most of our customers are) obtained MG- flocks it would result in more problems and more sick chickens for them. Therefore Ideal Poultry having an MG clean flock would actually be a disservice to our customers. Ideal Poultry has provided poultry to customers since 1937 and continues to be the largest provider of backyard poultry in the United States, selling over 5 million chickens annually. Wish i knew all this before i bought my ducklings from you this spring. I really hope my flock isnt now in danger. Do you tell your customers that you have MG? If not then THAT is the disservice to your customers..IMO. Actually..i dont ever remember being told by you people that you have a disease in your hatchery...i would have liked to have had the option of knowing this before i bought from you and put my flock at risk. So now, if my flock comes down with MG..you are the ONLY place i could have gotten it from. Nice..real nice!
