Ideal MG discussion

Let's reserve judgement on this people and let's please keep the thread open. Ideal has had the professionalism to respond here and that means a lot. I do have some concerns with some of the statements made but those should be addressed individually.

I do not have time now but I ask everyone to take a deep breath and step back. Let's learn from this. I know I have.

BTW I know a lot of people who got chicks from Ideal who are MG free.

I'm sure EVERY hatchery in the country can/could/should say the same exact thing regarding MG. Thanks for being honest with us, Ideal. I've ordered several birds from you this past year and I've NEVER had a problem...my birds are nice, HEALTHY, and productive.

If you had MG you would know it by now. If you do turn up with MG you still could have gotten it from many other sources.

There are many strains of MG. I need to study this further.

Don't worry Wendy.

They should tell people this before they buy from them..its the right thing to do..

Purple Chicken, my hen didn't have a blood test just a mucus swab. I guess that means they still could have MG.

The vet talked like the swab would show any respiratory viruses when cultured, I didn't realize MG needed a blood sample. But the rest *seem* healthy so I'm not going to worry about it right now.

It's extremely concerning to me that Ideal has MG in their breeding flocks, but I'm wondering now where you can find an MG free flock. Seems like it's everywhere.

Don't worry too much at this point. If you had a strong strain of MG you would know it. Most vets don't seem to even be phased by MG.

The facts of it being "everywhere" are limited. It's definately in a lot of places.

I'm posting my own post again to remind anyone that didn't read it that it has a link to information from Gary Butcher, a poultry veterinarian at UF, with current information about the difficulty in eradicating M. gallisepticum from commercial poultry operations and the clinical relevance of MG infection. I have been following this thread because I ordered from Ideal this year. After reading the document at the link above, and knowing that my free range birds are exposed to lots of things, I have not worried about whether Ideal has MG.

Wow it is really true that MG is only the concern of Backyard enthusiasts. I guess since the regular commercial productions use antibiotics regularly they don't really have MG/MS on the watch or "bad" list like pullorum, and avian flu which can wipe out a whole farm. When PC had the state test they said the same thing, that their concern were the more deadly diseases and MG was not on their radar although they will do the testing for it.

Since antibiotics are not an option for me I will be avoiding all hatcheries in the future. Its a good thing I am closing my flock and have all the breeding stock I need.

I would say to those concerned hatch eggs from small breeders that you ask lots of questions from before hand.

Its NOT everywhere! But it certainly WILL be with hatcheries sending out MG+ birds to people..

And this isnt just about Ideal..let me be clear on this..i'm having a big problem knowing that ALL hatcheries are MG+..
And who tells their customers this? I was never told...thats why i am upset right now.. I think its SO wrong to sell to people...knowing you have this disease. At least give your customers the choice...tell them when they order from you that you have a disease... Maybe i'm wrong..i dont know..I'm just mad right now for some reason...
