The birds I have ordered from Ideal have all been great. I am sorry you had a bad experience with them. Never have a Seen genetic problems and they always are so so Healthy when I get them because I am right here in TX as well. Hope they contact you.

When I ordered, I called them upset about the one that died, only because it was my sole purpose in making the order. I got right thru to someone.

They do have a guarantee I think. Maybe you could get a refund and go to another hatchery??

I order from Ideal alot. And they have been helpful when I have had chicks die/mixups.

Make sure you call during their business hours. I know I am in the est so I wait to about 10 am to call them.

Also, make sure when they get to the post office they aren't setting them under a/c vents or anything crazy like that.

My post office wiped out a whole shipment of cochins for me one time by putting them under the vent. Fun stuff.

You also need to look at how far away you are from the hatchery and the time of year. It is pretty cold up near where you are this time of year. That is a long flight from texas to Pa. Plus if they unload the plane and the chicks are outside for a while before they get moved inside the airport. Don't get made at the hatchery for those things outside of their control.

As for the toes. Call them. The chicks might be able to grow out of it.

The one that died it sounds like it got cold.

I would recomend getting your chicks in the spring time. Nature will be on your side and the weather will be warmer.

Ideal is a great hatchery. I buy 200 chicks and turkeys from them each year. Sometimes I don't have problems sometimes I do, but like my dad says, If it wasn't for mother nature he would retire a rich man. (We are in the nursery industry and farm.)

Good luck with the chicks. Take a deep breath. Ideal has very good customer service just give them a chance to make it right.

Yea, it just kinds hurts me to see chicks that can barley walk....only 2 were really bad, but the other 6 still don't walk normal, I don;t know whats up with them not answering I will have to check out their hours..

I seem to be a collector of...not so right....birds, lol.

I take in every one that I see at the feed store that I feel sorry for. One of the top hats I got from Ideal....I will say I am glad I got that one....was rare and ended up having crookneck and lived in my house for a year before he passed away.

Just a suggestion, whether ordering from Ideal or another hatchery...if there's only one breed you want one of, it's risky to only order ONE. Better to order several of that breed, then if you lose one, you have others. If you end up with more than you want, you can sell the extras.

But, $160 order to obtain ONE chick of a particular breed just doesn't make sense to me. Why not find a breeder and buy one bird from them? Even if you had to drive a bit to pick up the bird, that would cost a lot less than $160.

Or order hatching eggs for the breed you want. Again, I'd get more than one, to improve the odds. And raising a solo chick is sad, they get lonely, and don't learn how to bond with other chickens.

I've never ordered from Ideal, so I don't know anything about the quality, but bent toes (or any other deformity) sound like a serious problem, it would stop me ordering from them again. And I'd probably ask for a refund.

When the chicks hatch, they throw them into those mailing boxes so fast, they often dont see the issues they may have. Ideal sent a BR chick to my local feedstore whose neck was turned around to the side, shaped almost like a Z. It was skeletal and the poor thing could only walk in circles. The owner gave it to me and I took it home to check out, but after two days, culled the sweet little girl.
