Ideal temperature in nightime coop - pics included

I think the addition of heat in the coop is reallly only needed when the waterer starts to freeze up. They need thier water available all the time. The other problem is that the eggs may freeze in the nest box.

Ventilation is far more important than coop heat for the reasons already given. I would close off the northern vent or western vent and leave one open. Best to have vents at highest point tho, and not as low as yours are. In warm weather a draft , even directly on birds is fine and likely they would prefer it. In Ca, winter temp is not likely to be an issue ever.

Thx we are going to do a remodel tomorrow close up some vents and in some closer to roof

Wow, that makes me feel so much better! I have Serama hybrids and I've been fretting about them in our coldish (for Texas) snap. It went down to 22 degrees in their coop last night...but our chickens were in the garage, where it was 20 degrees warmer. I didn't let them out in their yard until it got up to 32, and they seemed ok...but now I won't worry about them quite so much.

Our Chicken Coop is 48 inches long 32 inches deep 36 inches high with some ventilation it has two windows ,which we close at night .
They are 8 weeks old RIR and we put them in the chicken coop for the first time on April 9th and they have been in there since
it's still getting cold at night in 30's , we bought a 250 watt red heat light bulb to keep them warm, or so we hope.
I'm new at this so I hope that is enough heat for them, I check on them before I go to bed and they are huddled close to the light I sure hope I'm doing it right I'm very fond of the them I don't want to do the wrong thing here with them
