you can still have a rooster and not have babies. all you have to do is collect the eggs but then again if you free range they may hide a nest and one may go broody and sit on them. i love my roosters they are sweet and loving and they protect the ladies from dangerWell I bought a RSL"Heidi" from a local "chicken Lady". She grew up great, great layer and became my favorite hen. I had some upper resp. problems with some of my hens, not her. I called the ag place to find a vet that worked on chickens. Next thing I knew they called me back to do a NPIP test on my birds. I had seen that on this site and thought it would be cool to have a ##. Well you would know that the very first bird that was tested was Heidi and yes she was positive. We did the rest of the flock and she was the only one. The state had to take her away. I was lost. I could not believe it. They came for a recheck and all was good. I had them run every test they could on Heidi to help the rest of the flock. She had the highest result for MG and MS that they had ever seen. I call the chicken lady to tell her and she said that she did not breed the RSL she got them from Ideal!!!!!!!!!! She herself does not test and said that she would not test. If she has a bird that gets sick she "knocks them in the head". Well I treated my flock for the upper resp stuff and now everyone is great. I know that if I were to ever bring a new bird here that they would be exposed and have to be treated. I cannot have a roo because I do not want to have babies.
It has so ruined my whole chicked experience.
Thanks for letting my share.
God bless.
