Yep..i totally agree with you Brunty..totally. And it scares me that people are taking this so lightly..it really does. But..eh..its their birds and their deaths..not my problem. Well actually..it does become my problem when they spread it around...

I've delt with it twice... once when I was like 14 or so. I had no clue that chickens even got sick at the time. I was told by the Ohio State University that the best way to get rid of it was to "kill" the flock, disenfect and then start with new birds from clean stock. I was 14 and had 25 or so different breeds... a really cool flock that I was close to, many had names, however I didn't ask for anyones help when I had to kill them. I killed about 30 birds one by one... many didn't even have symptoms... it really did suck.

As a result with that I have became very distant with a lot of the poultry I raise. I know they have a purpose and help me make a living. I give them the best life I can and when it comes time to replace them or process them, I know I've done my part in helping sustainable farming.

However even with all of the precautions I have taken in my current flock of almost 1100 birds I have somehow managed to bring in MG in my flock. How? Moyers sold me started pullets that were infected with the disease. I've managed to isolate the layers from the rest of the flock so hopefully I can keep it at bay.

My point behind this whole thing is that hatcheries should take the initiative to have their birds tested so we don't have to deal with these situations. Moyers had no clue that there birds were infected but they have managed to get to the bottom of it and actually be concerned that they are spreading MG.

Fattie... you know first hand how MG is a disease that you can't just have in your flock? I'm not sure why your defending Ideals statements? If the NPIP told you to dispose of your flock or don't sell to anyone... how come these hatcheries don't have the same guidlines?

Bottom line is Ideal has MG positive flocks in their operations... they have been open and admitted to having this and yet they still are selling day old chicks all over the country. Wether or not they are sick or in great condition they are still infected with a very contagious and horrendous disease...

RedHen,

I too am completely dumbfounded and have not the slightest thing good to say about the situation. I can't believe that people are blowing this thing off like it's not a big deal. I'm surprised there are not more people that are outraged by these statements.

Beats me... I'm just trying to keep the peace. I have always liked Ideal. They are not snotty to their customers like some hatcheries are (Privett, for example). I cannot knock good people.

Never said they wernt good people..I just dont agree with the lack of concern reguarding MG... That they may be nice folks does not factor into it at all...

I agree, I think they are a great hatchery for being concerned about their apperance and their willingness to come on this site and ask questions. However, I'm a little set back at the fact of their lack of concern about the health of their poultry and the millions of others that are receiving their poultry.

Probably great people. I've delt with a lot of hatcheries and none has even attempted to defend their products on a forum like this... so to that I give them credit. But they do need to rethink they way they are going about this MG thing.

Well I bought a RSL"Heidi" from a local "chicken Lady". She grew up great, great layer and became my favorite hen. I had some upper resp. problems with some of my hens, not her. I called the ag place to find a vet that worked on chickens. Next thing I knew they called me back to do a NPIP test on my birds. I had seen that on this site and thought it would be cool to have a ##. Well you would know that the very first bird that was tested was Heidi and yes she was positive. We did the rest of the flock and she was the only one. The state had to take her away. I was lost. I could not believe it. They came for a recheck and all was good. I had them run every test they could on Heidi to help the rest of the flock. She had the highest result for MG and MS that they had ever seen. I call the chicken lady to tell her and she said that she did not breed the RSL she got them from Ideal!!!!!!!!!! She herself does not test and said that she would not test. If she has a bird that gets sick she "knocks them in the head". Well I treated my flock for the upper resp stuff and now everyone is great. I know that if I were to ever bring a new bird here that they would be exposed and have to be treated. I cannot have a roo because I do not want to have babies.

It has so ruined my whole chicked experience.

Thanks for letting my share.

God bless.

But anyone could have this disease in their flock then, right? So no Craigslist birds, no birds from the nice neighbor lady. How can I know for sure that i'm getting healthy stock then? I ordered 20 chicks and 10 ducks from Ideal back in May. They all seem healthy and I have been planning my next order from them.
I would like a link to the thread where they were talking about this, please.
I am new to chickens, but would hope that an disease would be taken seriously by Ideal...

PhlyinPheBee, what was the NPIP Test like? And how much did they charge you for that? I also think it would be cool to have the #, and feel more confidant that chicks or eggs I may sell are healthy and safe. Thanks for the info.

you can still have a rooster and not have babies. all you have to do is collect the eggs but then again if you free range they may hide a nest and one may go broody and sit on them. i love my roosters they are sweet and loving and they protect the ladies from danger
