Ideas for free range protection from hawks?

What kind of clutter do you have in your run?

How about a pallet up on blocks or a little lean-to?
We don’t have a run, just a large-ish fenced backyard that they free range in. We have plenty of bushes but none of them are evergreen so they’re not much help during the hawk migration months. I think a pallet on blocks is definitely the most practical option.

If he does that it can cause the boy who cries wolf effect so you might wanna find a new head rooster.
I agree with that, I think that effect has already set in. We never meant to have a rooster, we just happened to find this one in a nearby park so we mainly keep him for sentimental reasons. He’s sweet but definitely not a good head rooster.

That sounds like a good idea. What percentage of your flock’s area would you say is covered with netting?

I'd say 50% right now...maybe 40%. We increased one run, so we will be putting up some more netting. It does make the backyard look a bit like a jungle camp...but it helps keep the hawks from "take out chicken nuggets."

Where do you get your netting?
I got my deer netting from TSC.
