I would like to switch to a new kind of waterer as my current one which is a bucket with drinking cups is leaking. Do you have any suggestions for diy waterer s? Thank you!

This one I found while searching for ideas. I don't have chickens yet so I don't know how well it works but seems to be a great idea.

I had used cups before they were fine for the summer but the cups do get dirty and also freeze in the winter. Switched over to the flip over type open waterers, those the water gets dirty and needs to be replaced more often and also freeze. Now I use horizontal nipples on a 5 gallon bucket. Absolutely love this setup. #1 water always stays clean, some just keep adding water to this type of setup and only clean it a few times a year. I empty and refill every 2 weeks now and water has no smell or slim to it so I am sure I could go longer and may do so in the future. If the water stays clean without any contamination getting into it there is no reason for it to go bad. Also i have two of these setups and one has a 50watt aquarium heater in it and the other has a 100 watt aquarium heater in it. It has been down into the teens so far with no freezing issues at all and that is without any insulation wrapped around the container. Visit @aart page he has a nice detailed description of the whole setup. Very simple and provides clean water with very little maintenance. I order the horizontal nipples online from Amazon. I prefer the rent-a-coop ones as the spring feels alittle lighter(less stiff) to me making it more user friendly for the birds. Also the nipples can be used on just about any plastic container of shape or size. For example I also have a 2 gallon set up for the "sick bay".

I would first ask....where is it leaking?
I try to fix stuff first.
DIY or purchased...post pic or link of it?
Do you like the cups...or really want something different?
Cups and nipples can be tricky, need to know how threads work to avoid leaks.

Adding your location would help...
Climate is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
