Ever since these chickens just showed up in our back yard two months ago and decided they were ours, I've had some questions about them. We've pretty much figured out who's a rooster and who's a hen, but the breed of these birds still eludes us.

Chicken people I know in real life have suggested that our hens, at least, are Black Australorps, and that seems reasonable based on what I've seen on Google images. They do have those nice dark feathers, and several have some pretty iridescence to them as well. However, if you think they're something else, please let me know.

Our rooster, though, looks nothing like the rest of the flock. He's bigger (even compared to the other roos we got at the same time but have since rehomed), much redder, and has a really different comb shape than anyone else. I'm very curious what kind of chicken he is.

I do not know how old these birds are, exactly. That's part of the mystery. When they showed up and moved in, they were in that awkward teenage chicken stage but are now growing very nice combs and waddles and re-growing tail feathers they lost in an earlier molt.

Here's a short video of them to compare the size of our roo vs our hens, uploaded to YouTube for ease of sharing. (In case the link doesn't work, that's:
)

Thanks, y'all.
