if a hen is sneezing can you still eat the eggs?

hello

i have aPOL warren that hasatiny sneeze going on and a little bit of a swolen ear just started yesterday its not sore and its not large - i dont know if sheis ill or is stressed with the transition from a new home with new chickens and new food etc etc
but today she laid her very first egg ever !!!!!!


can i eat this as it looks perfect !!!!!

Yes her egg will be totaly fine to eat.. And enjoy her first egg lol... Theres only a handfull of antibiotics that you carnt eat the eggs... Tracy.xx

Almost certainly yes the egg will be fine. Very very few chicken illnesses are zoonotic (can be shared with humans).

Sounds like you should look into CRD though, respritory disseases are no fun. Also look up biosecurity and quarantine for poultry, you may sadly end up regretting introducing this new bird to the flock.

If you start medicating for the respritory problems though the meds will have a withdrawal time durring which eggs should be considdered unfit for the table. The med package will outline what the withdrawal times are.

yes i am looking it to crd

at first i was not sure , as when i bought some "nutridrops" the letter stated that the chicken could have a cold etc etc as there was no other symptoms as she eats drinks runs around
no sound of chest noises no eye or swellings at the time
recently as i said the ear swollen up so i am watching her carefully

i do know its probably too late for quarentine they will all have it as i think it showed it self firstly in my roo who I had bought as a day old chick ( now15 weeks ) sneezed for about 3 weeks and has just stopped - no other symptoms at all .

the ear ( swollen at first it was soft and mushy now it seems hard and small pea like) showed itself a day after i took her "sister" away from the group for bed rest - she has i think a sprained knee she hobbles on it a little now but at the time it was alot - doesnt suprise me though she likes to climb high and jump down landing on anyone in her way !

i have had the two warrens for 5 weeks today. - i did not know about quarentine at the time and was told by the farmer i purchased them off to put them straight in

ive learned the hard way. i did check them over propperly but then again chickens do not like to show weekness

i have a friend of mine who works with farm animals to find the best treatment for me as i do not have any chicken vets nearby and my dog vet has said they will look but most likely not treat with a consult charge of about 40 to 50£££££

what luck im having

im glad though that she is in no pain and eats and drinks everything in sight and is more than happy to run around the garden doing chicken stuff for now. when i find the right medicin she will be on it as will the others as a precaution ( if thats correct?)

WIth respritory issues I think it is best and the standard approach to treat all that could be exposed. Which med is going to be best is sometimes a matter of matching the symptoms to different possible infections and picking a med from there, sometimes it is a case of just working with what is availible.

Still likley good to separate the ill chicken if for no other reason to make treating and monitoring easier and prevent her from getting beat-up as they often do turn on a sick flockmember.

Dont worry we all arnt experts when we first buy chickens! I learnt the hard way too by buying chickens and putting them strait in with my other chickens and mine all had some sort of respitary desease! they all had to have baytril oral then i gave them all Tylan 200 injection form as they still were not picking up, mine are ok now (famous last words). i see your inthe uk too, where did you get yours from?
all i have is a pets at homeshop and the internet ( hopefully the vet may change there mind at a leter date!)

I phoned my local vet who supplied it to me.. Have you got a vet near you? i would phone them and explain what you want and they should order it in for you... Make sure you say its for more than 1 chicken..... You can buy Flubenvet wormer on line at The Domestic Fowl Trust and a few other medicines... everything else ebay but its very restrictive ,

i will do my best with the vet to see what they will do and i will tell them its for more than one bird ( i have 5 intotal so ill tell them that)
