Awww! I would like more I did have 6 but 2 have sadly passed away in the last year
I would love to have a couple from baby’s but have never seen any that I can buy younger than 8 weeks old.

Best plan is to buy "viable eggs" and either find someone with room in their incubator, or pop them under a broody hen...once hatched and dry, they need a warmer plate to snuggle under until fully feathered (out of baby-fluff) I had mine at 3 days old and they were a joy to watch growing and changing!

Seems this thread is largely dead, but figured I might as well hop on anyways.

We're out the back of Stratford in the beautiful Taranaki hill country and have a mix of 20 Orpingtons (blue, black, and splash) in the incubator right now. Currently no chooks of our own, but that's clearly going to change rapidly.

Anyone here harvest their chooks for the freezer? We're trying to figure out which strategy makes the most sense in our climate (harvest once a week, once a month, twice a year, once a year, other...), and thus how many birds we should have on hand at any given time and I'd appreciate some feedback from people who understand our climate/weather patterns.

Hi Have you tried trademe? Some breeders advertise hatching eggs on there.

There's the slightest chance it's worth checking out the rare breeds directory (https://www.rarebreeds.co.nz/directorye.html#chooks) and maybe calling or emailing the people listed for leghorns and inquiring with them.

Full disclosure: I've reached out to a few people on that list when I was looking for Indian Game eggs and never heard back. Still, it cost nothing but a few minutes to draft the first email and then seconds to copy and paste it to each additional breeder.
