If I have to get rid of all of my birds, how am I going to do it?

I am trying to research the legality of keeping them. I was reasonably convinced that I would be covered by the Michigan RTFA, but now I'm really unclear. I honestly don't think anyone knows, its all a legal crapshoot at this point.

So, I'm trying to do a lot of soul searching and decide whether or not I want to subject myself and my family to possible legal issues with local government. If I were the titled property owner, and it just involved me, I would not hesitate, but I'm not, and I don't want to drag someone else into this.

So, how would I ever go about "rehoming" all of these birds?

Well, that's one thing I don't want to do. Give them to some random stranger who may or may not take care of them, and may or may not eat them. Heck, with many of them, I'd just process myself. But I have certain ones that I am NOT willing to do that to.

But thank you for replying.

Post them for sale on CL, perhaps in trios. And be sure to list them in the BYC Buy, Sell and Auction area. Also the thread oertaining to your state.

Good luck!

I would choose which ones are to be taken as pets only...post those first for a fair price. Also, if you get a buyer, meet with them and ask questions...you should get a "feel" for who's going to be a good owner and who's not. Then work on the others and if worse came to worse....could you process some for yourself?
I have to say I am surprised to hear this from you...I understand what you are saying, and that family is more important. I'm surprised because I have read a lot of your posts and I know how much you love them. I hope you don't have to get rid of them all

and I would be concerned for my birds too as to where the laying flocks would go...some are so special I could never eat them!

I wish you the best in your decision....and the pending results. Keep us updated.

How many do you have??

Did you check with the town regarding the laws BEFORE you got your chickens, not just assumptions? I made sure I got it in writing through via email so there would be no issues later. If you did not prior to getting your chickens, then you really can't get upset at another's posting suggestions. You asked for help. If Craig's list is not for you then ask around, post signs at a feed stores but realize that your outcome may not be to your liking.

interview the people from Craiglist that may want to give them a home if you dont like the persons
just say no and move to the next person, not everyone is bad I've gotten all my chicks off CL and I spoil
them rotten. I think you can judge the charactors of the people who want them you can even let them know that
these are your pets and you want to see for yourself where they will be kept so you have piece of mind, good people wouldn't
be bothered by that at all I know I wasn't

good luck and sorry about your dilemma.

How many do you have? You may want to see if a local farm would want them, or maybe a local school or nature center? If you post in Craigslist maybe insist on going to the house to make sure they have a coop etc set up.

If you haven't had any issues I would try not to worry about it and just keep your hens then deal with the legalities if/when an a problem comes up. Where are you located? How do your neighbors feel about the chickens? I knew someone who had hens for years and her neighbors didn't care. They gave her their scraps and took care of them at vacation time. With the economy the way it is and the food scares we keep hearing about, more people are growing or raising their own food and governments are realizing that. I say keep your hens.

Call your city zoning board. That should clear up the legal question for you.
I wouldn't give up without some type of fight. You have the right to appeal and apply for a variance. At least try. It's not a big ordeal. If more of us would try maybe more would win the cases. I have not had any luck with Craigs List to re-home my Americana Rooster. SO I will deal with that problem when it gets here. One Day at a time.
